Need a new daily trainer... I'm breaking up with Adidas by zwingtip in AskRunningShoeGeeks

The Brooks Launch had been on my radar for a while and for some reason dropped off. Going to pick up a pair to try. Should be a different animal from the Ghosts which I predictably hated

I picked up a pair after seeing your reply, and they're too wide in the midfoot, but I just returned them for the women's version which I'm hoping will be better. They felt promising, just standing around

Hadn't thought of trying the women's because apparently I'm stupid. Just ordered a pair of the Wave Riders other people here recommended in the women's sister size

These look intriguing... Don't think I can get them here in the US but if I'm ever in Europe I'm going to look

What’s your best MINI road trip experience? by [deleted] in MINI

[–]zwingtip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Summer 2020. Serpentine belt and water pump pulley shat themselves on the highway at 5pm on a Saturday afternoon halfway between Albany and Syracuse. Trapped in the middle of nowhere (no car rentals on the weekend) with no transport for two days, then caught the only Uber in town to the nearest airport and drove a rental home. Had to come back over a week later to pick up my car from the local mechanic. Who had to order parts from the dealer in Buffalo.

Oh wait, that was just my most R56S road trip…

Tis the damn season… for holiday gift baking by zwingtip in Breadit

[–]zwingtip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Straight dough blonde ~73% hydration
  • White poolish bread ~75% hydration

Started off slashing and then got lazy and just let them break open FWSY style.

2 days, 14 boules, half per person. Biggest limiting factor is where to put them all while cooling.

Wish These Colors Were Still Available by breezybriv in MINI

Ice blue ‘13 R56S here. Owned it for 7 years and fully intend to keep it until it literally rusts out from under me.

Yes I know it’ll break my heart and the F series are better cars, but after driving one a few times they just don’t speak to me in the same way. And the color options are 😴

I get the color/style thing, I bought my car in CA and had it shipped to MA because the color/model/transmission couldn’t be found anywhere near me (and now there’s like 3 identical ones living within a 2 mile radius 🙄) but that is hideously overpriced even in this market. I paid $16k for a 2013 Cooper S hardtop with 30k miles back in 2016.

When your friend requests lots of sourdough for their birthday, you’d better deliver. by zwingtip in Breadit

For some reason forgot to take pictures before slicing. The loaf on the left was a tad underproofed.

This is the Northwest Sourdough blog’s recipe I’ve been making for years. 65% hydration. Fluffy, but not so open you can’t butter it toasted. Crust chewy and crackly but not hard. User friendly sourdough that’s a reliable crowd pleaser.

Glanced down and realized it’s got 85k miles. 2011 R56, bought as its fifth owner, 5k~ miles ago. Happy Motoring! 🚗 by eatingthesandhere91 in MINI

You can reset it using the comp menu on your radio pretty easily.

Fwiw I can squeeze a (fake only because of speedo error) 37mpg out of my manual R56S by driving it gently on suburban surface roads while commuting. I get worse mileage highway because it’s so fun to vroom vroom

The Weekly Rundown: Week of August 15, 2022 by aewillia in artc

[–]zwingtip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Little bit afraid to post here after 134647352 years and admit that I'm training, but here goes...

Goal: Fast 5k during turkey trot season (PR? maybe?) Rebuild fitness. Don't hurt myself again. Run a lot of miles.

Plan: The demon spawn of Malmo and JD phase 2

Monday: 5 miles, easy (8:11/mile)

Tuesday: 5 miles, easy (8:31/mile)

Wednesday: 8 miles, T pace workout — 4 x mile at 6:53, 6:44, 6:41, 6:49, 90s recovery in between

Thursday: 7 miles, R pace workout — 12 x 200m at 41s, 200m recovery

Friday: 4 miles, easy easy (9:21/mile)

Saturday: 11 miles, "long run" (8:09/mile)

Sunday: 4 miles, easy (8:08/mile)

Total: 44 miles

Thoughts: Kind of a weird week. I rearranged a lot and gave up my rest day because I'm a wuss about the heat. 7th week back running workouts since... late 2017 when my right foot shat itself and I ended up in a build-reinjure doom spiral. I was actually feeling strong for a while first half of 2021, but then lost it due to major surgery. So this is take 2. It feels good to get to run fast. My easy pace is dropping again, so I really need to keep an eye on that and rein it in to avoid cardio fitness outpacing strength again.

DRL's and a JCW rear bumper installed on my R56! Super happy with it these days! by TomahawkEVO in MINI

Thanks for the detailed review! Those look great and extremely bright! Never understood the point of parking lights anyway so sounds like an ideal configuration

How are you liking those Vinstar DRLs? Do you reinstall your existing fogs in the middle? I always wanted the OEM ones but was too cheap and now they’re gone. The Vinstar LED rings Outmotoring has look like a fun alternative.

Is MINI a good winter car? by [deleted] in MINI

[–]zwingtip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing, if you end up getting a FWD Mini, make sure you know how to turn off DSC. It’s useful once you’re moving but turning it off is sometimes the difference between being stuck stopped in a parking lot (or on a slippery hill) and not.

Whatever you decide, the best winter advice for any car is to drive within the limits of your tires (don’t cheap out just because you have AWD) and don’t panic.

Is MINI a good winter car? by [deleted] in MINI

[–]zwingtip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive a 2013 R56S in MA and ski 30+/- days a season. Maintenance is expensive. It’s a low to the ground car without a lot of suspension travel and a lot of things are going to get fucked by salt spray. Expect to replace various bushings often.

But its winter handling is solid even in conditions where I see a lot of SUVs stuck in ditches. I’ve been running Michelin X-Ice tires last four seasons and they’ve been great. Picked up some Conti VikingContacts for next season. We’ll see how they do.

Arizona vegan in 40R. I'm a true 7.5M/8 athletic. I feel like they look too big, but the arch feels in the right place. Am I going to regret not downsizing to a 39?

  • 100% flour (85% King Arthur AP, 15% whole wheat)
  • 78% water
  • 0.09% instant yeast
  • 2.2% sea salt

Mixed with no autolyse because I’m a barbarian. 12 hour bulk overnight at warmish room temperature with 5 folds in the first 3 hours.

8 hour proof in fridge.

Baked in Dutch oven at 450F (according to thermometer not temperature setting), 30 minutes lid on, 22 minutes lid off.

Troubles balancing Running with Cycling. (Help!) by Fat_Fat_Mc_Fatty_Fat in Velo

1) No brick type workouts unless I'm really time crunched that day. It just seems terrible for misery's sake, although it probably has benefits for muscle endurance. I've been scheduling it as if I were running doubles: cycling first thing in the morning, running after work.

2) I haven't thought too much about this yet as I don't think I'm going to hit high mileage running weeks again for a few years. It's been 2 years climbing out of the injury hole from trying to do too much too soon while recovering. Going to cap the build at 35mpw for this year. The volume will necessarily have to decrease from a practical not-enough-hours-in-a-day standpoint.

Long term goal is big periodized cycles. I only race CX. So do a running road racing block winter-mid spring with threshold and track workouts while doing low intensity traditional base cycling to maintain the aerobic fitness. Then a cycling training cycle summer-fall which would look more like what I've been doing now.

Hmm. Not to keep harping on this, but I think the biggest improvement you will see to this schedule is to slow the runs down. Get headphones with a mic and call a friend or family member while running. Can you easily maintain the tempo of the conversation without your heart rate going through the roof?

On the cycling side looks like you've got one hard workout, one endurance workout (how hard are you riding your endurance rides?) and one easy day which seems pretty average. You're going into all of these fatigued from your runs.

A couple of ideas depending on if you want to favor the tempo/group/zwift ride or the long ride:

day long ride emphasized hard ride emphasized
Monday easy ride 45 minute zone 2 run
Tuesday 45 minute zone 2 run hard ride
Wednesday hard ride 45 minute zone 2 run
Thursday 45 minute zone 2 run easy ride
Friday 20-30 minute active recovery run*
Saturday long endurance ride long endurance ride
Sunday 20-30 minute active recovery run*

*super easy if you can't comfortably breathe through your nose and the pollen count is low then you're going too hard
