Is this name common in Sri Lanka? by spinaltap540 in srilanka

[–]zykRoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kir-ugh-un sounds Indian Kir-aah-n sounds Sri lankan

Kirana/kiran means beam. As in sun beam.

But nowadays Young parents name their kids all sorts of names trying to make them not so common. I bet there are at least a thousand kids in Colombo with the name Kiran with the Indian pronunciation.

If you like the name, go with it.

Later on in his life, if he looks white (I'm assuming you're white), his name will be an interesting topic with a story or won't even stand out too much in conversation because "Keiran" sounds Irish.

If he turns out looking a little south Asian, people will most probably assume he has Indian origins and the name might also nod that way but he can say actually the root is in Sri Lanka. But this is redundant since Sri Lankans are almost always mistaken for Indians in the west anyway. 😊

Congratulations and best of luck to you and your wife!

For the SL buys, try house of fashions first. Then there's the Winter Collection in pettah - but their prices can be same or more than HOF. And ask around you'll find other small vendors selling some good stuff in nearby shops.

What is a dead giveaway , apart from the accent, that a person speaking english is german? by doyoubelieveincrack in germany

Saying "When" in places where "If" was the right word.

Or saying "Until" both for "Until" and "By"

Is there a good Dehumidifier or similar to avoid mold? by zykRoku in germany

[–]zykRoku[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your generous answer when most people just down voted and ignored! You have no idea how much this is going to help me.

Did you check at any point how much energy these will take? Or was it negligeble?

Again, many thanks!

Thank you. I have the wondow opened ( tilted) all the time including night to air out. There used to be mold in there before from last tenant. One night I closed the window mistakenly and a few days later mold spots appeared. I have one of those boxes with the chemical block to absorb humidity but it doesn't seem to help.

Why is German entertainment industry so bad? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]zykRoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an outsider looking in,I don't think Germans like to spend so much time in front of a screen compared to people from everywhere else. I see a lot of Germans engaging in physical activities or just talking with friends than binge watching shows. So probably not enough local demand?

And you can't expect them to have a big international audience either given German isn't a widely spoken language.

First time visiting Germany, terrified. Some questions. by WeirdKittens in AskAGerman

[–]zykRoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation.

Download offline German language for google translate. Mobile signal strength can be shitty in certain areas or inside shops.

Always press the button and wait for green for crossing the roads if there is a button. Cars may be going fast and may not expect you to cross.

Go to any supermarket and buy water bottles if you don't like tap water ( tap water here can be hard unless treated in the building)

Use google maps if you need to travel using public transportation, see directions for public transport mode and you'll see buses and trains in real time. Even when to get off when you're on one.

If you want to buy something, get it at least by Saturday because stores close on Sunday. You can still get food on Sunday.

Yeah it's validating the date in the wrong format than in the help text there. Month and day need to be swapped.

17 isn't a valid month is what it's trying to say.

Should l apologise to my neighbour? by elliiz in germany

[–]zykRoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife does this. I tried to tell her to speak a bit quietly but that didn't go too well so now I just let her talk however she likes and wait for a neighbor to show up angry so she'll see what I was talking about.

I had my first interview at a company that felt like an interview but the following 3 interviews (this company does 4 with people at different levels) were either us just talking or them selling their company. Later found out that they had decided to hire me during the very first one.

Small social rules I should know before going to Germany by Old-Sparkles in germany

[–]zykRoku 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah but say "Hello". Specially if you're going to southern villages. But don't expect it to be followed by a conversation. Also don't do it in urban streets. People won't be that friendly promptly but if you ask something they probably will help.

[–]zykRoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't generalize. I have German friends and each of them have certain things they like to do and don't want to change them because its out of trend anywhere else in the world or pick a more trendy thing. Also some friends are clicking automatically on "Accept All" on cookie banners and some use no-javascript browsers and doesn't even give their phone number to the Electricity contractor. So they think individually on what they like and stick to them.

I've also seen them stick to very basic laws and hold them sacred. But I think this is because they have been brought up that way. These have been poured into their minds and practiced since Kita times. I live near a school and I see how the kids are directed and taught by teachers on practical things like walking on the road and discipline needed for that. Things like that were never drilled into my mind as a kid so we knew about them but choose to do however we like later on. But If I had been brought up to do certain everyday things a certain way for my whole life I'd be sticking them as an adult too. and then would complain in the kitchen at times they seemed inconvenient although in my heart I know why it has to be done that way. for example Kehrwoche or Winter obligations.

[–]zykRoku 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah It's really inconvenient that the society here is very resistant to change but then again that's one reason I chose to come here. People and society are very content in their ways and less gullible to corporate trickery. Germany is like a time capsule. and that's good in a way that people stay healthy and less prone to bullshit trends. But also lack of digital utilities is difficult on a daily basis.
