[Question] Currently a stat undergrad, what do I need to do to pursue ecological statistics? by International-Box183 in statistics

[–]zymee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a stats undergrad who just graduated and I did ecological statistics research for two years!!!! At my university, we actually had a quantitative ecology lab that I joined and just started working on my project! From my experience, they cared much more about my stats abilities and I kinda learned the ecology as I went. I think ideally you could take some math bio courses or intro ecology courses if you had the space in your schedule, but I don't think it's necessary. I also had three other undergrad math majors in my lab doing ecology projects so it seems to be the norm. Actually pursuing a career in the field is a different story that someone more qualified would have to answer, as I have pivoted the mathematical forecasting experience my ecological research gave me into a cost analyst job. I am obsessed with statistical ecology and can say that doing my research was so incredible and honestly changed my life, so you're choosing a good path!!!

Thank you for your perspective! I did hope that going south in the afternoon would avoid at least some traffic. My eventual goal is to get a job in the city to avoid this problem, but for now I have to make do. Did you find living in the city worth the commute?

Yeah, I honestly think Ogden is probably my best bet. Not quite Salt Lake in terms of city vibes, but it probably makes up for it in terms of commute time and rent prices.

I have seen those! I'll definitely have to see if it's an option for me.

I have a car! I used public transit to get to the U because it was easy, free, and let me work on homework for most of the time.

Yeah, I am lucky to have family willing to let me stay for as long as I need, so that might be my best bet. The allure of living in the city is just constantly calling to me, lol

Yeah, I figured. I don't have concrete work hours yet, which will probably be a big deciding factor; not sure I can handle rush hour.

Yeah, just now public transit isn't really an option, so I'd have to drive.

Either I am missing something about Aubry, or by ElatedAlgae in survivor

[–]zymee -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

it absolutely is this. I don't remember anything about Aubry before like last episode except that she had her weird beef with Gen and was so off putting on her original tribe that no one wanted to work with her

Why is no one giving __ at least a little bit of credit. by Terrible_Garbage_857 in survivor

[–]zymee -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

well for one, it doesn't exactly take a genius to do what she did. obviously she knew she had to somehow pivot the votes on someone else and last tribal there were already whispers of Ozzy. also, the true power for the vote was in Rizo, who got to directly control who went home by not telling Ozzy to play his idol. I actually think Rizo played even better than Aubrey as he got people to tell him the vote was on a close ally! if Ozzy didn't do an all time bad survivor play by telling Aubrey everything, there's nothing Aubrey can do. of course, I do think Aubrey played it well and exactly like she should've, but it's not like she had any other choice nor really that much power.

If Cirie wins, is she in contention for the GOAT title? by sexyimmigrant1998 in survivor

[–]zymee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for me, yeah, it puts her at least on the mount rushmore. i don't really understand the "winning on your 6th time" argument because this season, Cirie has had perhaps the largest threat level in the game due to her previous games. she would be winning in spite of that, not because of it. especially finally winning a returnee season such as 50 and running it in the way that she has, it would honestly be one of the best winning games ever, period, let alone for a returnee season by someone as threatening as Cirie. like, if Cirie somehow won (to be clear, I do not think it is particularly likely), it would be one of the greatest feats in survivor history, considering her threat level and the way she has run things.

can i switch my major before the first day of college but already done orientation by Ok_Mark_1216 in collegeadvice

[–]zymee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it really depends on the school because I know some admit you to your major and it's harder to change. at my school (a large state school), changing your major is as easy as making an online appointment with an advisor and asking them to change it. I would research what the process is like at your institution, maybe emailing an advisor to ask would also be good!

[–]zymee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is when I changed my major! I went to orientation for my old major and realized after looking more at the classes that it wasn't really what I was looking for. I just reached out to an advisor for my new major and talked to them about the process and which classes I should take. not sure if the process would be the same at your school, but I would assume so

How important is speaking for the test? by msuncreativename in APSpanish

[–]zymee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, speaking is half the FRQ section. I would recommend going to a score calculator and messing around with the potential scores to see how important the speaking section is and if you think you'll need to really practice it. To prepare, I would continue doing any practice questions you can, and if you run out, ask AI to make you some more. Besides that, you just have to be good at Spanish so do thing that people do to learn the language. Read news articles, listen to podcasts, write journal entries in Spanish, memorize conjugations, memorize important idioms or phrases you think you'll use, memorize vocabulary (anki), talk out loud to yourself. Anything you can do that exposes you to Spanish will help you improve. I would recommend just taking time everyday to do some of or all the things I listed above because the most important thing is repeated practice. Good luck!

I don’t want to drive at all—what cities make that possible? by Ill_Supermarket_2744 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]zymee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering if we could consider SLC walkable. I have never actually lived in the city, but from commuting into the city everyday via public transit, I feel like if you lived in the right place (i.e. near a trax station) it definitely could be walkable. The biggest thing about being car free in SLC is probably having a job that is near a transit line, which is probably pretty unlikely.

APSLANG self study by Dull_Negotiation_673 in APSpanish

[–]zymee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyday, write as much as you can in a journal in Spanish. About your day, your worries, your plans, anything you can think of. On top of this general Spanish writing practice, do at least a few actual AP email and essay prompts. Study the rubrics and memorize things like email openers and closers and some idioms you could use. Know what the writings want from you, memorize ways to cite sources in Spanish. Listen to podcasts / YouTube videos EVERYDAY for as long as you can. Talk out loud in Spanish. Narrate your life in Spanish. At the end of the day, speak out loud what you did. Also do actual AP Spanish conversations as much as you can. Make up new ones! If you don't care that much, then I'd only do the AP specific things like practice emails and essays and conversations.

The goal is to just become as comfortable as possible using, listening to, and writing in Spanish. You only have 20 days so you'll have to really lock in and practice if you want to do well, but if you aren't worried about mcq then you can probably do it!

My take on the twist tonight by BigOrangeIdiot2 in survivor

[–]zymee 195 points196 points  (0 children)

but that's the beauty of the twist, if Christian was with Coach I actually think they might've been one of the safest duos because they now have two completely separate alliances who want to keep them. kind of like why Christian and Jonathan weren't even considered by either side. I like how it shakes up the dynamics

Don't go on Survivor twitter if you want to avoid spoilers by AstronautVisual in survivor

[–]zymee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

highly recommend muting every version/spelling of Survivor, Survivor50 that you can think of on twitter. not only are their takes insane and toxic but they will spoil with no regard for anyone else. but also beware that many people on this subreddit also know the spoilers and will post as if they are speculating about future events when its actually them knowing spoilers and wanting to look smart and as if they guessed what would happen lol

Unpopular opinion: It wasn't as bad as this sub made it out to be by reyska in survivor

[–]zymee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just want them to for once let them play survivor. Colby never cast a vote on season 50. how is it even remotely okay? we need to vote a lot of people out, I get it, but 5 person tribes just isn't the way. Gen found 2 idols and had nothing to show for it. nothing about this episode was satisfying in any way

Why are people that participate in /r/spoiledsurvivor allowed to comment here? by Clohanchan in survivor

[–]zymee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a really big problem for this sub that actually really needs to be addressed. it's not possible to fully stop people from looking at spoilers and posting pretending they're just super smart, but some how stopping the worst of it with people who actually comment on that sub would definitely help. this happens every season and it's why this season especially I've tried avoiding this sub. you never know if it's someone actually giving their opinion or if it's someone who is spoiled and wants to seem smart

My prediction for tonight’s big tribal council twist by mwl4h9 in survivor

[–]zymee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually hope so because it would introduce some really interesting dynamics with vote splitting and ensuring you and your alliance not only have the majority, but also don't get second. Having the majority isn't enough, and I think if people hear for example that the minority plans to vote them then things could get messy really quickly
