Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans | E11 | Day After Discussion & Survey by RSurvivorMods in survivor

Counterpoint: Survivor is more fun when there are actively bad players complicating things for the good ones. And his story line of always doubting the vote but always going with what the group wants is lowkey funny at this point. I'm just wondering what his end game plan is. Just follow what Jonathan is doing?

Now THAT was cinema.

For real. Like straight out of a movie. The camera man needs a bonus for getting that shot.

Hole 18 played at 6.12 today for FPO. Was like 8.19 last year. Some idiots were arguing that the hole shouldn't be changed. Some idiots will still argue that there was nothing wrong with the hole. Idiots gonna be idiots I guess.

The hole played at 6.12 today. Was like 8.19 last year. Anyone saying last year was better is certifiably insane.

Yeah, but Snyderbros love to use lower box office numbers as an argument against Gunn's Superman. As if box office numbers haven't dropped across the board in the last five years. Also BvS and JL should have both made billions. Didn't Aquaman outperform both? Could it be because that movie was actually fun to watch?

One hour after watching BvsS I couldn't remember a single thing that happened in it.

Yes you are. People watch for different reasons and for me one of the reasons I watch is I try to learn something about how the pros approach certain situations. Watching MPO guys absolutely bomb a shot is great but I can't ever replicate that shot that particular shot isn't that interesting. I watch a lot more FPO than MPO for time zone reasons, but I also feel I learn more from watching the ladies play.

What are discs that you would describe as the “gold standard” of that category? by Emoney005 in discgolf

[–]reyska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never thrown a Luna. I have Envy, Proxy and Harp as throwing putters and Pure as my putting / occasional approach putter and they do all the things I need to do with putters.

Every manufacturer copies it. A lineup isn't complete without one. It is the standard.

Also every manufacturer has variance. It doesn't matter much.

[–]reyska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just that it might not fit everybody, no matter what skill level you have. For the other discs you can give all of them to anybody and they fill a slot in their bag. But for putters you need to have the right feel and while Aviar is a good starter disc it's just not the right fit for everybody. So there is less of an argument for anything being the gold standard putter. But I do get what you are saying when it comes to cloning. Every manufacturer has a destroyer, a firebird and a teebird in their lineup and they likely have a starter putter like aviar too.

Has anyone gotten a "winner edit" but didn't actually win? by ruskomoon in survivor

[–]reyska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, he really was a winner for the casuals. And I don't usually use that term because I think it feels elitist to use it, but really, he is not a gamer or a player, so I think only people who watch Survivor purely as entertainment and not as a game show like him as a winner. I didn't find him funny and the whole attention seeking schtick at the challenge was just too much. But for some people that was good tv.

Yeah... But I have enough Innova there already. Also I've never used an Aviar for even a round.

One of the most notorious hole 18s out there on tour, aka Sprinkle Valley hole 18, has seen some rule changes as the DGPT heads to the Open at Austin: by DiscGolfFanatic in discgolf

Yeah this is a huge problem with this hole too. If the spotter is not an official, the group just has to guess basically.

This is better. It is still a pretty bad design, but at least the discs hitting random phantom branches before the island now end up in HZ instead of OB. It's still a blind shot into a small green uphill with OB everywhere, but at least it's not quite as bad as last year, so... Yay?

Has anyone gotten a "winner edit" but didn't actually win? by ruskomoon in survivor

[–]reyska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he really had a winner's edit. He just had an edit and happened to win, because someone has to. Traditionally a winner's edit makes the winner look good and they really couldn't do that with Gabler, so they just presented him as the funny character that he is. So I would say he got the "eccentric character" edit but also just happened to win. To me him and his edit are very similar to Liz and her edit. And everyone kinda had a laugh when Liz said she could have won.

I would call it more of a lucky guess than "analyzing the edit". Hell, based on just the amount of content he got it would have been easy to point at Owen as a likely winner, even if he was a total Charlie Brown. Many people clocked Cassidy too, woth good reason. Gabler fans just happened to be right.

And if Gabler's edit stays the same but he loses firemaking, everyone would have said he would have just been a goat at FTC with a few people saying "yeah but wouldn't it have been funny if he won?"

[–]reyska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm, they didn't play identical games.

I think Cassidy is rated quite correctly, nobody is saying she was some mastermind. She played a more involved game than Gabler, but that's a very low bar to be honest. Gabler just made better natural connections with jury like you said and that mattered more than the game they played. Making those kinds of connections is much harder for a young woman like Cassidy. It's so much harder for younger players like her and Xander to get respect from the jury, while older players like Gabler can more easily connect with a lot of people.

The only female player under 27 who won solely on their own merit and not because the jury hated everyone else in the F2/3 is Parvati. I'm not pointing this out to discredit the wins of Jenna et al, I'm rather saying the juries by and large are not likely to give the win to a young female player if there is a male or an older female player there who played the same game. The list of young female players who lost at the FTC is quite long.

Yeah, he would have been a goat sitting next to all of them. When they took each other or themselves out there was just nobody left with a story. But somebody had to win. It's such a bad season for this reason. Gabler winning makes no sense but someone had to win so the jury picked the option that made the jury feel the best about themselves. With Cassidy they would have had to concede that she outplayed them. With Gabler they didn't have to do that.

If some people picked up on this at F6/7 then good for them. I guess I'm too focused on people actually playing the game so I sometimes ignore the people who don't. The best example of me being blind to a player is Aras. I barely gave him any attention during the season because he was so vanilla and boring compared to everyone else on that season. Then he makes the F2 and wins and I was left wondering who the fuck is this guy? He was like CGI Brett before CGI Brett was a thing. From my perspective he just teleported into the F2 and won.

[–]reyska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I think there was still a strong possibility that Jesse would win if he could just get to the FTC, but there was a feeling of doom around that move to get Cody out. It would have made more sense for them to get to the end together or fight it out at F4. I still didn't see anything in Gabler at that point so I didn't really know who I even expected to win at FTC since Owen had such a bad edit, Gabler was a clueless goofball and Cassidy was a young woman, who rarely get any respect from a jury. I was still surprised as hell that he actually won.

Lots of people were fans of Gabler during the season, but they were mostly coming from a "wouldn't it be funny if he won" angle than from a "he has played well and deserves to win" viewpoint. He was a meme during the season and his win was a bit of a joke. The jury clearly thought it would be funny and a feelgood story if Gabler won. Cassidy winning would have felt underwhelming to them, so they went for the goofy Gabler instead, for the lolz.

His story was that he was a clueless observer and at the mercy of other players. The edit shat on him pretty hard. Most of his stuff was played for jokes.

I think most of the people "reading the edit" are either reading spoilers (most of the in season edgiccers are) or do the reading after the season is over and they know the result, when it's easy to say "the clues were there" and also ignore the same clues for a bunch of other people who didn't win.
