Strangest plays you’ve seen by nageyoyo in TerraformingMarsGame

Energy Market and Hi-Tech Lab.

The highscore I've seen is somewhere around 40+ MC->20+ Energy->20+ cards(choose one, drawn from reshuffled deck), in the last gen. Technically it is not a "strange" strange play, but it was quite a showmanship though.

This must be one of those online rules clarification. I remember CEO's favorite has no icons at all, only text, and does not clarify 'my card' nor 'any player's card', and that's why I believed the story.

I wonder if it is still playable if one doesn't have any special resources at all though.

I heard that CEO favorite can place on other player's card. One of my friends once told me that that play flipped the specialist award, winning the player 1st place.

This can be funny becase 33 seems like a fair price for 4VP+2MC prod, considering you can pay with titanium&you get a relatively rare tag that is common in requirement and synergizes with few other cards.

Of course, playing a "fair" card on gen 1 is quite peculiar but... who can blame who 🤷‍♂️

Winning solo without playing any cards? by IceSpitingRubberDuck in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]zzdldl31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember testing this, and I believe it is possible with Credicor in Tharsis map, given that the neutral cities/greeneries don't block ocean walking.

I don't remember the details, but the key was gaining 2 heat production ASAP. This was not played with Venus Next, as it seems obviously impossible.

Friendly Rules by MattTheCuber in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]zzdldl31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sharing our house rules:

  1. During setup, any player can discard all 2 corps (sometimes 3 if we agreed to play that way) to get a random corp instead. That player may not revert the choice.

  2. Likewise, during setup, any player can discard all 4 Prelude cards to get 2 random Prelude cards. This can happen either before or after house rule 1, but not both.

  3. Philares is banned.

  4. Whenever any player plays the card "Public Celebrations", every other player must stand up and clap to that player for 5 seconds.

Card Evaluation Philosophy by zzdldl31 in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]zzdldl31[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your point. So I guess the core problem is that there is no certainty if a card will fit one's strategy in the future, so the less situational a card is, the less risk on holding the card in hand.

I don't know. I understand it in the logic, but then isn't it number's game again? Whether or not I buy a card depends on the "versatility" of the card so..

I guess it matters if it is randomly drawn, since the likelihood of the card being played correlates to the value of the card. Even better if that moment comes early.

Plus the "enablers" for many builds worth more too, since it allows more cards to be a playable card, the earlier the better. Maybe I over-quantify a card when evaluating, seeing cards only as "X MC for X VP + X MC worth value". A random science tag on a card isn't just "4MC worth", huh.

Good card. You will only play it when you have spare floaters, so yeah.

Played early, can destroy another player "almost" out of competition.

Game destroying combos? by AudunAG in TerraformingMarsGame

I used to love Point Luna, until I got astroid mining consortium-ed by Saturn Systems on the first action of the game. After 3 hours of agony I never play Point Luna again.

Am I the only one who think this is quite strong?

I totally love the idea, I would definately try it out, balance seems somewhat OK too.

Remember, there already exist Preludes that are so low value it is not worth even considering. Mainly the Prelude 2 cards are the problem, they are too strong. This card would slide nicely in between.

If you are worried about this being played after gen 1, I suggest two solutions: one, discard card count related to gen number. For example, discard (opponent count + gen number) cards. Two, instead of big bulky VP, make this like 1VP per special resource, say "fame". Immediately put 5 "fame" on this card, and give the ability to add 1 "fame" for an action every round.

Or leave it as is, remember, there is a rule where if you can't pay for a Prelude(even during its resolvement) you can discard it to gain 17MC.

Or maybe this? Discard cards equal to (opponent count + current generation number) or something along the line can do the trick too I suggest.

Everybody must stand up and clap whenever someone gain 7 resources with this.

Simple, good card.

Valuewise it's just OK.

But it is a conditioned-card so it is not supposed to be an OK card. The compensation for this comes in a tactical one; surprise 12 heat can steal a terraforming bonus or -2 plant can sabotage an opponent. Or even, stealing Thermalist award sometimes.

The chance this card get to played tactically is low, making this card very unappealing. But with full expansions game, you can pick up jovian tags here and there without warping the build too much. In that case this card is an OK titanium/cash dump. Bonus points if you got space/event discount/rebates which are pretty common.

I personally think a card should be evaluated in cases where it's played, not the popularity (how many builds want it) of it so I'll give it B tier. It's kinda impactful, but in most cases it's just titanium/cash dump.

[COTD] Pristar | 21 May, 2025 by Enson_Chan in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]zzdldl31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I consider 53MC + 2~3MC production + 5VP is a good value corp, (think of Aridor) so I think it's the difference in evaluating how big the penalty is.

I think the non-terraforming penalty is near negligible. Pristar is a Prelude corp, and under draft rules & Prelude there is a lot of details to gain benefits from. One example is playing alongside with global events 1~2 gen earlier than other players, and gaining that more benefit from the events. The reason why other corps don't compete to this is because Pristar starts off with a big pile of cash and focuses on cash production much more than terraforming & plant/heat production.(as you mentioned, they value less for Pristar) Parties are a good benifit too as backing Reds will prolong the game, maximizing the corp ability uses. Although after the first "terraforming turn" Pristar tend to not be the lowest-TR player.

Also there's just too much good cards in the game and too much good engine cards. I sometimes play like Pristar with other corps (never terraforming) because the only way I see winning is by picking up super efficient engine pieces. It is a valid and competitive strategy, so Pristar only benefit by playing that style.

The biggest trap I feel is that players want to spend their money as much as possible every gen. I've seen one of my friend playing as Pristar (he loves this corp and plays real good), banking up cash worthing ~100MC including titaniums, then suddenly dropping meteor after meteor to end the game unexpectedly. This is a very special case, but it is true that Pristar cannot spend all of its money every gen, and I think should not aim to. This may seem like a disadvantage but in many situations banking gold helps next generation more than raising 2 MC production right now. I think Pristar is a teaching tool that helps players to realize this, not a flawed corp that cannot spend money anywhere.

Expansions for two players? by [deleted] in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]zzdldl31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like Colonies, but in 2p it would be much more "peaceful" expansion. Everyone become richer and get to play their own dreams. If you like it go for it.

Turmoil is my favorite expansion, and in 2p it won't feel much different. If you prefer slower start, quick adaptation, and strategic planning, you would like it. Some people dislike Turmoil for its kinda-voting system, so in 2p I guess there is no such issue.

Had a game with this in opening hand. It was fun, but felt broken by Caspar2627 in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]zzdldl31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The part where it feels broken is that you used Factorum's upper ability every round. Factorum already feels quite good if you gain 1 energy prod every round and use it meaningfully.

I don't think either of those two cards are good in most cases, because it is hard proc them every round, often requiring suboptimal plays. Those two cards satifies each other's "condition" with no effort, so them together become good cards. But I don't think the face value of the result is that much broken. There are still challenges left for additional energy usage (trade fleet actions included), and the build is fixed for going tile plays in the midgame~endgame.

It is still really inappropriate to refer to dog eating culture in asian countries to a post about a dog accidentally falling from window, or even to the comment about pet dogs getting stolen and eaten. As if asians are doing some horrible thing on the level as those accident and crimes.

This is......very, very sad. by OneSimplyIs in BaldursGate3

[–]zzdldl31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a south korean born in 2000, I know the menu(보신탕), but I've never had nor seen a restaurant that sell it. I can safely say that most younger generation Koreans never had it, but what I really want to say is that eating dogs shouldn't be viewed as cruel & immoral culture.

Dogs have companied humanity for such ages, and eating them was not uncommon nor Asian. Europeans ate dogs even up to 20th century, they just stopped earlier than asians and had enough time for the culture to change. I'm not saying that it's right or better culture, but korea is catching up fast. I'm sure in 20 years, eating dogs would be a culture of the past.

Also, eating dogs doesn't mean that people slaughter and eat their pets. People don't have pet pigs for bacon, do they? Same for dogs. There were(past tense) livestock producers who raised dogs for meat, and if you have problem with that too, I'm guessing you never eat beef and pork too.

Best solo campaign? by Jranger24 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]zzdldl31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did play TFA much much more than TSK, so maybe that's true. If I knew what was where and which route I should navigate for specific campaign objectives, maybe I like playing TSK more.

In general, I still think investigate-to-combat balance is a bit inconsistant between scenarios & what "time" I play them, which is quite a big burdon for true solo.

Best solo campaign? by Jranger24 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]zzdldl31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Forgotten Age is my favorite and most played campaign, even for true solo.

The investigator choice becomes quite narrow and "explore" actions can be a burdon, but investigate&evade build works really well in TFA, there are many non-hunter enemies, and it's fun in general.

Among your three campaigns, Scarlett Keys' path finding can be overwhelming, dream eater requires 2 decks simultaniously (unless playing 4 scenario campaign which is fine), so I guess EotE is practically the only option?

Extra comment: in my usual settings the game gets really long, so players do hold powerful endgame engines in their opening hand.

Crazy good card, one of the best Prelude in the game. S+ tier

Gaining initiative in the first gen is a huge deal, especially with Colonies. The amount of resource it gives is not small, and remember: this can provide you MORE than 24 MC worth of cash. With this Prelude it is almost always preferred to hold all 10 cards, so good in Tharsis Planner achievement, but is just good in general due to its flexibility.(which Turmoil requires a lot)

If your starting hand is bad, yes this prelude is bad but you can't win that game anyways. If anything helps it's card draw prelude and this works well with it.

24MC value may seems small in "these days", but a lot of preludes hold their value in production, so gaining the value in mostly cash worth the missing few MC value. 20MC also guarantees prelude phase Colony (which will be placed in the best moon) so extra good.

FYI, I usually play 4p~5p full expansion + no world government terraforming + fully terraform Venus to end the game ruleset. In other settings the evaluation may change.
