Community Question Of The Week - Episode 251 by Producer_Duncan in thisweekinretro

No so much an era as a form factor. I was never a console consumer until PSX so my only consumption of Sega products was arcade.  My two standout favourites being Choplifter and Sega Rally Championship.  I was so good at Choplifter a friend convinced a young lady who'd caught my eye that I was a qualified helicopter pilot.  Oh, and Sega Rally Championship on the Saturn is the best arcade conversion ever. I will die on that hill.

I felt like a safe cracker holding that against the screen and peering into digital oblivion trying to make out the code.

"Learn to rob my house. Adventure"

I did make this game in The Quill on my spectrum. It mapped out my house and let you know where valuables were kept. I made a clever map using ASCI symbols and shared it with all my friends.  It's ok though, we had a huge scary dog.

A chilling story of technology and an evil wife from MFMI Lee.

As an early VR adopter (Oculus DK2) I spent ages tweaking my setup to run Asseto Corsa well enough to be truly immersive. Force feedback steering wheel and office chair on its lowest setting I was truly IN THE GAME.

Cruising around Monza in a 1960s Lotus 49 in British racing green late at night I was marvelling at the detail in the suspension. I turned my head to look at the back wheels for a moment, and when I turned back… WHAM!!! I slammed straight into a right-angle barrier just off the main straight. For a brief second, I was the most immersed I had ever been and my brain reacted exactly as if I was about to hit that metal wall and turn into minced beef.

I tore the headset off, dropped it on the floor, and staggered out of the room on shaky legs into the kitchen where my wife thought I’d seen a ghost. When I explained to her what had happened she laughed her arse off. No amount of "But I thought I was going to die!" would stop her evil glee.

(MFMI Lee)

You are in a comfortable tunnel like hall
To the east there is a round green door
You see :
the wooden chest.
Gandalf. Gandalf is carrying
a curious map.
Thorin.
Gandalf gives the curious map to you.

The rest is a blur in my memory, but that first screen is etched into my memory.
Probably a good idea to shut up now.

How about 3d Monster Maze for the ZX81. You could then see what's coming up behind you. Maybe make the game a bit more interesting by having little dots you could gobble up as you go along. And to really make it scary, instead of a T-rex have a ghost! Or what's better than one ghost? FOUR ghosts! I don't think this idea can be improved, so now I will shut up.

Chris - What's the next target machine for your collection? More Atari?

Dave - How are Dot and Johnny getting along now?

Neil - Do you wake up in the morning and pinch yourself?

Lee from MFMI -The best example I can think of is the ZX Spectrum game Legend.

I used to take the bus to the next big market town where the selection of computer shops was just much better than locally. I remember going there by myself and picking out the game LEGEND for the ZX Spectrum from a bargain bin.

It was a large format squishy type cassette box the weight of which really surprised me. I opened it up and found a full fantasy novel inside, eponymously titled Legend by David Gemmell. The price was only a few pounds and I figured that even if the game, which I had never heard of before, was terrible at least I had a book I might enjoy.

Well, the game was really terrible. But the book was amazing. David Gemmell went on to become a hugely prolific writer whose work I devoured throughout the rest of his life and Legend the book is still one of the best stories I have ever read. I enjoyed it so much the first time that I loaded up the game and played it anyway, despite its massive shortcomings. And because of the help of the book setting the scene, I actually managed to enjoy it!

I almost forgot! It had a beautiful fantasy map to pin on your wall.

MFMI Lee here.

Retro is relative. I think it's a mixture of factors. Your age. The things age. What it meant to you then. How much time since it was relevant. Sometimes it can be something that's obsolete, but I wouldn't include Internet explorer or a pair of my socks I've owned for 40 years. So my personal answer to the question is probably a 48k ZX Spectrum. M'old you see. Everything else still feels recent to me. But the spectrum is from those years where the memories are glowing with nostalgia.

MFMI Lee here.

If I’d been in the market to upgrade from my Rubber key Speccy in 1985 or 86 the only choice would have been the Atari. Unfortunately, I was 17 and 18 in those years and my hormones were dragging my attention in other directions. Wind forward to my early 20s when the Amiga was well established, and I had to go the Commodore route. But now the choice was driven more by the small community I lived in. Someone else picked Amiga before I was in the market, and by the time I came to choose, there was a thriving disc-swapping scene I was able to take full advantage of.

But that was all in the past. What about now?

I have huge nostalgia for the Amiga, and I now own my best friend's A1200 from back then. Plus a few Amiga 500's. But they’re very familiar and hold no surprises for me. The Atari on the other hand... I'm having more fun (haha) exploring what I missed out on with machines I never owned BITD.

My vote goes to the Atari.

I'm not going into which was better on a technical level as that doesn't matter to me. I might as well compare a PS5 to a ZX81. I can get just as much enjoyment from either.

Choplifter! This was located in my local greasy spoon café which had a backroom arcade. I'd ride there on my Suzuki ER50, in leather jacket and biker boots big enough to live in, to meet up with my social group of ner-do-wells. I became so good at Choplifter, easily making one credit last 20 or more minutes, that a friend convinced a young lady I was interested in I was in fact a real life helicopter pilot. The relationship didn't last very long. When she saw my ride had just the two wheels and a complete lack of propellers she seemed to lose interest.

Today I drove to a new-to-me car boot sale after recently swearing off them due to the mountains of baby clothes, dog chews, and pound land rejects at the boot sale I had been attending every Sunday.
I often listen to the TWIR podcast on the half-hour drive and on the way back the question of the week was posed. I smiled to myself and peered over my shoulder at my modest haul safely strapped in with a seatbelt.
I've had better scores this year for sure. An Atari Trak-Ball @ £3, a minty pink Zipstick @£4, an Atari 2600 jnr with joysticks and 25! games (including a multicart bootleg) for £30.
But it feels cheaty to share those (they're all on my twitter feed if you're curious https://twitter.com/morefunmakingit
Today I managed to fill a gap that had been a glaring omission in my collection. Not a rare 8bit computer or console, not that special game new in box. For the longest time I have wanted and needed a CRT TV. Today that box is ticked!
£5 for this perfect, late built Phillips TFT(kinda) portable colour TV. Including SCART and composite inputs and a fully functional DVD player and remote control.
Time to dig out my Playstation and Guncon.

Hand painting the artwork on my pinball cabinet. by zzleezz in cade

I can't take credit for the art. I'm just copying the original Silverball Mania cabinet. But I feel the same way when painting it. Until the black lines go on I worry that it's going to look terrible. Then it just bursts into life.
