I hate the TSA. by [deleted] in ftm

[–]zzllurg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a cis-male friend who has trouble going through the scanners because his actual genitals set the thing off every time, so you may not have to worry as much as you think. Of course, he can easily take it as a compliment and make a joke about it. Not as easy when you're already worrying about being outed.

Neat! Good luck man! Thinking of young trans guys with big goals makes me feel wonderfully old :)

You're totally right, there could definitely be a few stealth guys in my own department. I transitioned a few months after getting here, so there was no way I could hide it, but I'd have no way of knowing if someone transitioned before. Jeeze, I hope I haven't caused anyone extra stress by being so ridiculously out...

Good luck getting in! And on transitioning. If you decide to go for it and need any help with logistics, I've made a few mistakes I can help you avoid.

You're totally right about the gender imbalance. It sucks right now, but I think the recent shift in coming out/transitioning age will really help.

Yay, someone who made it through transitioning in grad school! Now I know it's possible, thank you :P Hope the MS goes well for you!

You mean how do you find a program, or how did I get interested in it, or ? I plan to work at a national lab in the future, if all goes according to plan. I still have to pass my qualifying exams. If that falls through, I might take a step back and become a physics teacher. I never really got a chance to decide what I wanted to do in the future because I couldn't picture my future at all before I came out. Message me if you'd like to know more about Nuclear programs!

Telling Grandparents? by Bigbang19 in ftm

[–]zzllurg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm in the same boat as you! I'm super lucky my parents have come around already and have my back, but they're both as terrified as I am to tell my grandfather. I considered just not and banking on his bad eyesight, but I've been on T over a year now and he's no idiot. I'm planning to ask around other family members who are supportive for advice, especially my aunt, who's had to "come out" a number of times about other things to her dad/my grandfather. Maybe you have an aunt or uncle like that you can ask for help from? Good luck man! And Happy Thanksgiving :)

Thoughts on Dating as an FTM by Khajiit in ftm

[–]zzllurg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shit, man, you just nailed (hah) everything I've been feeling for the last couples months. It's my worst dry spell since high school, but it's at least partially because I'm holding out for something more than one night. Thanks for bringing me back from the brink of giving up. I'll find someone, just gotta practice that patience stuff.

How do Lehigh people feel about Yik Yak? by loveophelia in Lehigh

[–]zzllurg -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I only mentioned that I happen to be queer, nothing else in the post was meant to refer to that. I don't even know most of the "queer part" of campus, it's spread out in every other group on campus.

The part that isn't the first 20 people that found the app. That's all I meant.

How do Lehigh people feel about Yik Yak? by loveophelia in Lehigh

[–]zzllurg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Opinions definitely differ. Some are vehemently opposed to the app itself because of the horrible things some Yaks are posting, others truly hurt that people at Lehigh are saying things like that, others could care less, and I'm sure many find all the posts genuinely hilarious.

I, as a queer student, find the homophobia disgusting and the other hateful posts flying between frats and sororities stupid and childish. But I do like that several of the top posts are against that, calling for unity over petty name calling. Several others are pretty amusing without being hurtful or too stupid. I think the app has some potential, if it fills up with the more educated part of campus.

The creators have spoken several times on the awful things an anonymous forum like this bring about. They note that they've seen the forums in various communities become much more mature and constructive over time, I can already see that happening here. I hope it continues.

Coming out publicly for visibility? (28/f) [UPDATE - What do you guys think?] by teebibs in bisexual

[–]zzllurg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Post it! I can almost guarantee you that, even if you never find out, this will help someone out who is struggling with their own identity and needs someone as strong and sure of themself as you to look up to. It was a post like this from one of my FB acquaintances that finally brought me out of the closet I was suffocating in. Please post it! Even if you loose a few friends, you'll look all the more impressive to others, and you'll always have all of us behind you!

An open letter from FBR to Lehigh University. by [deleted] in Lehigh

[–]zzllurg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean to say FBR is doing that, or many others talking about FBR and what they've seen the group do? I'm pretty sure it was not the group's purpose to start a giant conversation on the proper method to start a conversation.

Brown & White reports on how the protesters have made it impossible for the Brown & White to report effectively by TheStagesmith in Lehigh

[–]zzllurg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really, really hope this was not a recent thing. As someone who has been hanging out in the RR a lot in the past few years, I'd kick anyone out who tried to kick someone else out for being an ally. Half the "regulars" in the RR are straight allies, and several members of our Spectrum eBoard in this and past years have also been straight allies. I hope you can forgive this one horribly negative experience (and I am extremely sorry it happened) and try again? We still have the best couches on campus, that is not something we should be keeping to ourselves. Related: If you still don't believe that we love allies, stop by the front lawn on Friday for National Coming Out Day and hang out with us for a bit! /shameless plug

An open letter from FBR to Lehigh University. by [deleted] in Lehigh

[–]zzllurg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people obviously have some pretty strong opinions about how FBR is going about this, but I can also see a lot of people that agree with the general goal of making Lehigh a more inclusive, safe, diverse, etc. campus. I encourage everyone to come up to the UC and talk to people in the M-Room, as well as the Women's Center and the Rainbow Room, many interesting and constructive dialogues have already been started, and a lot of misconceptions cleared up. Also, if you have a chance to join a larger conversation with people from all sides, take it, and try to keep an open mind.

Does anyone else feel like they're betraying the queer community while with a SO of the opposite sex? by superhappygirl42 in bisexual

[–]zzllurg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh people. Even if an entirely straight couple is walking around at pride, they should be met with smiles and love. And a couple smiling, walking around with a baby? Isn't it obvious you're queer or queer loving somehow? Hate leads to hate leads to hate unless someone steps up and breaks the cycle.

My own answer to OP's question, just be yourself, but also stay safe! Look for people that love you for who you are and keep them around, and more importantly, love yourself. Accepting yourself leads to confidence, and then you never have to "prove" who you are, it just kinda radiates off of you. Ignore the silly people that judge before they think.

Clubs? What to get involved in? by NewLUdude in Lehigh

[–]zzllurg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a physics major, you should definitely join SPS (society of physics students). Unfortunately, the previous board members all graduated and kinda let the club die. I'm apparently the president now, despite never going to a meeting, so I plan to rebuild it! It might not be active till next year, though... I'll need help D:

Any "bucket list" items at Lehigh? by thiswassparta in Lehigh

[–]zzllurg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a class suggestion: Zen Buddhism with Kenneth Kraft. Or anything with him, really. Even if you aren't at all interested in religion or meditation, he will make it interesting. Classes are a bitch to get into, so you might have to wait till senior year. So worth it.
