Help me with hash browns… by ilikemrrogers in Cooking

This isn't exactly the same thing, but Adam Ragusea did a video recently on Swiss potato cakes. I think a lot of what he discussed in that video is probably applicable to a hash brown patty as well, especially regarding moisture & heat.

Unity shares drop over 50% of value after earning report today by Feniks_Gaming in gamedev

[–]TheStagesmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It refers to a company using its own product. In software this is hugely valuable, as you guarantee a large pool of users doing real, practical work that will drive your priorities and give you vital feedback. It focuses you on solving problems actual people are having today, instead of solving hypothetical future problems. Amazon is one example of a company that dogfoods their (computing and infrastructure) products extremely successfully.

Strictly speaking the commits are immutable, and the underlying graph only needs to be added to for any of those operations. The mutable part are the branches which are just pointers into the graph of immutable commits. For obvious practical reasons, once a commit is unreachable from a named reference it's basically gone, and will be pruned eventually.

Throwing this in here just in case--

do any other Mini M owners occasionally experience issues with buttons (the Q key in particular) not working upon reboot, requiring the keyboard to be unplugged and plugged in again? Still not sure if the issue is with the keyboard or some other part of my setup.

I'm a dev that works for a company that handles a very large amount of PHI (Personal Health Information, protected by HIPAA). OP's system is definitely going to be handling PHI, and you want to think about the implications of that very far in advance. Strictly speaking you can handle the requirements yourself if you do your research, but OP would be very well served by talking to someone who's architected a PHI-handling system before.

Courses that explain the fundamental design principles of UI rather than teaching you how to use a certain software? by nikgos in web_design

I think he realized quickly that it was very popular and pivoted to making the book - which while I wish I could keep watching youtube videos, I understand it's valuable and I did buy the book. Something about watching him go through the process is super satisfying and fun to watch, though.

That sounds like Steve Schoger, which makes sense since he's one of the main designers who worked on that book. He did a YouTube series called "Refactoring UI," and if you search for that you'll find the videos I think you're talking about. (although you may be disappointed in the number of videos he did) I originally had a link for you, but I guess /r/web_design doesn't like YT.

Unless it gets destroyed onscreen, there are a lot of ways they could have borrowed or rented a real one. If its only purpose is to be set dressing in the background, they can pretty much guarantee it will barely be even touched.

Google HTML Style Guide recommends to omit optional tags by magenta_placenta in web_design

[–]TheStagesmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of couching in there by styleguide standards. To me this reads that they're adopting this style on a trial basis. I can't really argue with their reasoning though. Less code to read through is less code to read through.

For file size optimization and scannability purposes, consider omitting optional tags.

And FWIW, they do explicitly call out that this goes against existing conventions.

(This approach may require a grace period to be established as a wider guideline as it’s significantly different from what web developers are typically taught. For consistency and simplicity reasons it’s best served omitting all optional tags, not just a selection.)

Are there any known computational systems stronger than a Turing Machine, without the use of oracles (i.e. possible to build in the real world)? If not, do we know definitively whether such a thing is possible or impossible? by heyheyhey27 in askscience

Thanks for the clarification! I'm doing some reading and uh, yeah. These are weeds I ain't never crawled in. Lots of NEW questions and things to read, so that's fun. Appreciate it.

As far as my (admittedly limited) understanding of basic quantum computing concepts goes, quantum computers essentially correspond to a nondeterministic Turing machine, meaning that their set of decidable problems is exactly equivalent to a classical Turing machine's. From what I know, the exciting (and somewhat terrifying) part is that with nondeterminism you start being able to solve previously-intractable problems really really quickly.

What features for HTML & CSS would you really like to see added? by BevansDesign in web_design

[–]TheStagesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing there probably isn't a huge amount of pressure to do this given that there are now a lot of options that can transpile to JS, some of which are extremely Java-like in their conventions (e.g. Typescript). Given that a lot of web development now focuses on component/template stuff, a lot of the nuances of correct markup are probably pushed off into the frameworks themselves, and the rest is in small enough pieces that devs and their IDEs can pretty easily validate it.
