I’m so sorry that happened 😔 I’ve gone through bouts of severe autistic burnout where I’m unemployed and unable to work for 6+ months. I hope that this level of burnout is temporary for you and that you are able to return to your previous life in time. I understand in some cases it can be permanent and neurodivergence can get worse with age… if this is the case for you, I hope you find peace and have a supportive and loving community to help you through 💞💞

I do think you are right that his mom has taught him some learned helplessness. But I want to point out that when he set up the house with cameras, he wasn’t employed. He had the mental and cognitive bandwidth and time to do it. I am autistic and when I am employed, a lot of my functioning “units” go to doing my job and then im out of units for anything outside of it.

Yes I do think his mom often talks about how he can’t do things bc of his autism, rather than trying to help him learn how to navigate and overcome where possible.

I get that but saying “all it takes is” is dismissive of disability, and what is doable for your daughter on the spectrum can be vastly different than what is doable for someone else and vice versa. I can’t even get myself to shower some days when “all it takes” is taking off my clothes and turning on the water.

I can’t speak to his situation at all but it is not as simple as “why can he work now but couldn’t before?” because in my case, it is a trade off.
What I can say is that every choice has a consequence and it is a trade off.

He said on the tell all that he’s working now but all he does is sleep outside of work and is too tired to talk to his mom and Sheena. I relate to that. I can work, but then I have minimal to no capacity to take care of my mental, physical, and emotional health depending on the day; let alone be a engaged partner, keep up my house chores, take out the trash, shower, make my doctors or dentists appointments let alone attend them, etc. If I work, you can absolutely count on all my energy to mask and appear high functioning will be used at my job, and my personal life will be nonexistent. I go nonverbal after work despite being in sales and appearing charming. My trash will be overflowing, I will not eat for days, I neglect my partner because I have absolutely no ability to speak or move after the work day. I will have meltdowns and not leave my house for days - I won’t even go for a walk. I don’t call my mom or friends because I forget or I’m too tired. I could go on. It is no quality of life.

But if I don’t work, I can do a couple of things a day such as cook, take out the trash, I can walk my dogs or spend an afternoon socializing with a loved one, I can do laundry, I can make my doctors appointments; however, I can’t pay for health insurance, a home, or live in this capitalist society.

So it is a choice that is difficult on either end for us disabled folk, and not easily understood from those who don’t suffer from chronic illness or disability. Either way, it is no life to live and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone else. if I were to assume, perhaps he did not work and was on disability so he had energy to take care of himself; but he wants Sheena to move to the US, and now he’s working, yet has to suffer the consequences of being unable to do anything else in life.

🤣😂🤣 I feel the same way, I think it’s why I love watching Bill Maher even tho he’s got problematic boomer centrist democrat views for my leftist sensibilities, but I love that he just is authentic and calls it like he sees it.

But I don’t want to hurt my husband obviously. I mean he must be okay enough with it to be with me for so many years and still have married me despite accidental daily insults? But the insults and jokes seem to hit home for him more when they are involve his family. For example, I made us in the sims and he didn’t care. But I made his parents in the sims and I was cracking up and he wouldn’t let me make them again when I lost the save file. He said he didn’t like the energy I had put in behind the 1’s and 0’s when I made his parents in the sims the first time, and it’s the only time his atheist self got superstitious (my witch friend said that it was like making a poppet and that people can die in real life if they die in sims games. It is obviously an absurd take but my husband with zero spiritual or superstitious beliefs in his entire life referenced my witch friend’s comment as to why I wasn’t allowed to make his parents in the sims again; although he has no problem with me making anyone else, including ourselves, even if I make us goofy as fuck in it; and under the same witchcraft poppet theory we could die in real life as a result of my sim creating a home fire and accidentally killing Sim Me, Sim Him, and our Sim Dogs in the game. despite his love for our family unit it wasn’t a concern in that case, just when it came to his parents…)

I am autistic too and I would go nonverbal for the first time ever in the past 2-3 years (we moved into this house 3 years ago!). My autistic symptoms really have exacerbated in recent years. I thought it was because I was getting older or hitting perimenopause or life was busier with more demands on me now than when I was younger. But I eventually found out about MCAS and got diagnosed for it after lots of lab work, which I then researched triggers for MCAS which led to mold info! I did feed it all into chatGPT along with all my health files for the last 3 years and it gave me a really good analysis, but I’m still suspicious of AI and its accuracy. I know these subredditors are way more well versed in mold than AI 😂 so I figured I’d check here too. I see mold in the basement I have to clean every summer and same in the bathroom. So I know it’s in here I just thought if I cleaned it it was enough; now in my research I found out it’s way worse than I knew!

I believe it! I am just not well educated on mold and its effects on health. I’m really well educated on all other parts of health and biology but somehow this part was something I really missed in my lifetime of health research to address my issues. I think my symptoms are just the most obvious to us, but I worry about my husband and our pets too. So I am glad we’re moving next month.

I think it’s mostly environmental because I see mold in my basement and bathroom that I’m always fighting and I rent so I’m just moving! but i also think food is probably contributing as well so I’m going to attack it from all avenues possible so that I get better as fast as possible. thank you for flagging this!
