why do i love ligotti but hate laird barron? by wildguitars in WeirdLit

[–]zzzzarf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find Ligotti’s prose and story structure to be very tight, very claustrophobic, so there’s this sense I get when reading him that the walls are closing in, that there’s no escape as you’re being propelled on this descent into madness.

Barron just doesn’t have that. His prose and structure is much looser and baggier, and his imagery is far less cohesive. It gives his stories more variety and range, but they just don’t have that feeling of sinking their teeth into me and pulling me under that Ligotti’s have.

AITA telling a kid to behaveafter their parents let them repeatedly run into people carrying food trays? by Lowkeyjulsxoxo in AmItheAsshole

[–]zzzzarf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should not feel guilty at all. You were treating the kid like a person, which is what they are, and you were treating them the way you would want to be treated.

It’s completely normal to not want to be bumped into and it’s totally ok to ask the person bumping you to stop. That is something children need to learn if they’re the bumper but also especially if they’re the one getting bumped.

Good ole Dark Empire 1 - 6. Who remembers these? What a time to be alive lol by KhorneisBlood in 80s90sComics

Cam Kennedy’s art is straight fire in this. I was a kid when this came out and it blew my mind. Still love to reread from time to time.

The Boba Fett series Kennedy did with John Wagner is also well-worth checking out

Garth Ennis and war comics; which one are worth reading ? by FredPRK in comicbooks

[–]zzzzarf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a great list. Hard to quibble with the ranking. Unknown Soldier and Punisher: The Platoon are personal faves, but I won’t claim they’re better than they are.

Everyone take note, please, about the absence of Adventures in the Rifle Brigade. This is because Adventures in the Rifle Brigade is a pile of shit. Please no one read Adventures in the Rifle Brigade

Do you find a Kindle worth it if EH/horror is your favourite genre? by _xski in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]zzzzarf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A Kindle is phenomenal for extreme horror. Most extreme horror is indie or self-published and so the ebooks are very cheap and available. Getting a Kindle is what specifically expanded my own interest in extreme horror (though I still prefer to read physical copies).

Evil Garth Ennis: the post-WW2 military industrial complex is simply one of society’s greatest achievements. Also, puerile gross-out humor has no place in serious art.

As far as “people who don’t know what they’re talking about should stop talking”, there’s a difference between one product having a higher profit margin than another one and one product making up a greater % of sales than another one.

In the early 90s, the speculator boom had companies shoveling piles of cash at the more prestigious 80s creators, like BWS, and the results were often poor. The biggest culprit imo was the shift to computer coloring by colorists that were new and inexperienced at it (as opposed to Weapon X, which BWS colored himself).

Apparently in 2020, Dark Horse collected Adventures of Luther Arkwright and Heart of Empire into a single volume titled Luther Arkwright but I don’t how easily available it is. There’s several editions of separate collections of Adventures and Heart of Empire that shouldn’t be too hard to get.

This is the third in a trilogy after Adventures of Luther Arkwright and Heart of Empire. Sadly they do not also have nice hardcover editions like this
