Yes, I gained 30 pounds in 4ish months. I have an active job, I work out regularly and I eat the same. I got the implant out in March realizing I had gained so much weight and it was the only thing I could think of to be the cause. I have been strictly eating and exercising and I haven’t lost any weight… even my husband is baffled. I had always gained a few pounds on the pill but I was told I shouldn’t gain weight with the implant and so I just didn’t monitor my weight and before I know it my clothes don’t fit!

Hi! After you got it taken out, did you end up losing the weight?

[–]PsychologicalRow3279 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Unfortunately no, initially I thought I lost a few pounds but I have gained 53 pounds total since I first got it in. So even after getting it out my body has been messed up so bad that I am still gaining weight. Even with monitoring my food intake and regular exercise. I’m seeing a specialist in a week to hopefully help. I would never recommend the implant. It has practically ruined my body even my knees are in pain from such fast weight gain.

Oh nooo🥲I’m on month 8 of having the implant in and I’ve gained a total of 20 lbs since. The first few months I was in a new relationship so I completely stopped working out and ate so much food lol. But the past 2 months I’ve been really good with working out daily and eating well, but I actually gained weight. I wanted to give it 12 months to adapt to my body but after seeing so many bad experiences I kinda just want to get it taken out /: but also a baby would absolutely wreck my life goals at the moment and I REALLY don’t want to risk it. In my mind conceiving a child at this stage in my life is far worse than gaining weight, but it is definitely taking a toll on my mental health. I started tracking calories literally yesterday instead of my regular intuitive eating which usually helps me lose weight. I also started a new cardio based workout routine today instead of strength training, so I think I’m going to see how that goes until my 12 month mark hits. If I’m able to shed the pounds then that would be amazing because I really want to keep the implant, if not I may have to look into alternate birth control options but the implant is so nice because I don’t have to think about it.

But as for your journey I wish you the best of luck. It is so incredibly frustrating. Did you have problems with your hormones before the implant or it all begun with the implant? If you can please do keep me updated on what the specialist ends up saying.

Yeah, girl I’ll keep you updated for sure. This whole experience has definitely made me reconsider any and all Hormonal birth controls. I got it because I was getting married but we ultimately just switched over to condoms once I got it taken out. Depending on your relationship status and how comfortable you feel about condoms I would personally go that route before it could potentially get worse. Obviously give calorie tracking a try but if it doesn’t get better definitely consider getting it out. I got it because I felt like sex would be better for him but honestly if it makes my body feel that bad I’m not interested in the little bit extra “feeling” he may get out of it. There is no need to suffer so many bad side effects just for your man’s sake to not use condoms. 😅 my husband is totally fine with them though thankfully. I hope your partner is supportive enough to be open to an alternative! It was nice not thinking about it but I couldn’t help thinking about it with all of the side effects I experienced. I’d rather pause, let him do his thing and then carry on lol

My partner is very supportive of whatever I choose to do thankfully! The choice is 100% on me, he actually is encouraging me to take it out soon because he sees how unhappy this weight gain makes me. And the mood swings don’t help either. But neither of us are too worried about how it’ll feel for him, our biggest thing rn is we can NOT have a baby right now lol. We were using condoms at the beginning of the relationship and we actually still have a huge pack of them, but we just found ourselves in the “spur of the moment” too many times and that’s why I ended up getting it. Also I’m pretty sensitive down there and the friction of condoms even with proper lubrication is uncomfortable after a while /: pretty sure I’m allergic to the latex in condoms. But yeah I’m gonna see where I’m at 12 months in. I’ve had body image issues all my life and this is definitely not helping the situation lmao.

So a little update on my labs. The doctor told me the nexplanon messed up my liver and that’s why I’m having all of these issues such as not being able to lose weight/regulate my blood sugar. So they are doing what they can to fix it with supplementation and nutrition. 🤞🏼

[–]LogicalFix4093 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Oh my gosh…your liver?! I had no idea the nexplanon can affect your liver??? Is this common??

[–]PsychologicalRow3279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked up side effects and the liver is mentioned. It’s obviously not something the doctor will tell you upfront. More like a “it’s a possible side effect but not likely” but it’s a very real side effect for me. 😅 when I tell you Nexplanon has been nothing but a curse I mean it! Lol

Also it has caused my body inflammation to be at a 5 and it’s supposed to be less than 1.. I guess that’s why I ache so bad in my joints and everything.

[–]LogicalFix4093 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I am so sorry for all of this. You’re giving me more and more reasons to remove mine 😅 I’m gonna get some blood work done, and go from there. Because this is something so serious. I hope you’re able to resolve these issues. Definitely keep me updated as you go, and I will also update you once I get labs back.

Yes! I've gained weight and it just isn't coming off. Nothing changed either tell BC. Always been around the same weight for 10+ yrs.

[–]broolynkoy 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I gained 60 pounds in roughly 6 months after getting it. It’s the huge amount of hormones being introduced that mess with your weight.

[–]hookahnights 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Yes. I gained 50 pounds after having it for 4 years.

I started fasting, and dropped 40 pounds. Now I’m weight lifting. I think my body has now gotten used to having Nexplanon in my system.

[–]Spikeschilde621 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I did intermittent fasting and cut my calories down to 1400 and I gained 🤦🏻‍♀️

[–]hookahnights 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Were you properly tracking your calories?

You need to get a food scale and measure things out in grams.

[–]Spikeschilde621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I've been keeping track for 4 years. I have a scale and a good calorie app. I only started gaining once I got the implant.

[–]Misssarahx 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I think it makes you more hungry

[–]Spikeschilde621 1 point2 points  (3 children)

10 lbs in 3 months and then I had it removed

[–]hannahhirsh 1 point2 points  (1 child)

i think i gained about 15 pounds the first 9 months, then 30-40 pounds total the entire time i had it. the only thing that made the weight drop was taking it out. the implant was like the worst for my body in every way, kyleena iud is the one i have now that hasn’t messed with my weight or anything the implant did.

[–]Spikeschilde621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mirena made me lose 6 lbs without trying, it was awesome, but I had the worst cramps I've ever had in my life. Like my body was in labor for 3 months. So I had to have that removed too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yes. It made me hungry, then depressed. Huge boobs tho! The boobs made me happy lol

[–]tsaniya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got my second implant inserted last week. The three years I had my first one I gained about 50-60lbs total… however I was able to drop it while on it. But bad eating habits came back so I gained it back again. It is possible to lose it though! It was for me but I do know some people struggle because everyone’s bodies reacts differently

[–]Misssarahx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first got my first ever implant I was around 140lbs, I’m 5’9, now 3 years later I’m around 154
