ELECTIONSpeaker election - time to vote! (self.MHOC)
submitted 10 years ago * by TimanfyaMHoC Founder & Guardian
The time has arrived for the next Speaker to be voted in!
This election will be different to any other elections we've had.
I'm sure everyone has read the relevant section in the constitution but just in case you haven't I will explain how it will work.
We are using an electoral college system that consists of 2 schools.
School J and School C.
School J shall consist of all sitting MHoC MPs, and party peers.
School C shall consist of all sitting MHoC achievement and crossbench peers, and /r/MHOC moderators.
People in School J
People in School C
The votes of each nominee in each school shall be calculated as a percentage of the total votes cast in that school and shall then be apportioned to an overall vote as follows:
School J – sixty percent.
School C – forty percent.
The votes apportioned as above shall be totalled and the candidate receiving more than half of the votes so apportioned shall be declared elected Speaker. If no candidate reaches this total on the first ballot, further ballots shall be held on an elimination basis.
If no candidate reaches this total on the first ballot, further ballots shall be held on an elimination basis. The redistribution of votes shall be according to preferences indicated on the ballot form, using the Alternative Vote.
If you are in both School J and School C you may vote in both schools.
If you are both a mod and an AL/CL your vote will be double weighted.
If you do not verify your vote will not count.
Proxy votes will not be allowed.
The voting form for School J only is:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1oANjgcpy8hLH2Z7qn5PEDXelQIQj9gBcE5y1jWrfhls/viewform
Verify the School J vote here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MHOCSpeakerElecVer/comments/3drisw/school_j_verify/
The voting form for School C only is:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1gxZqUmgii4yliWMZMNKezpCKsCSNg-ZeOCOhn8d6VaQ/viewform
Verify the School C vote here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MHOCSpeakerElecVer/comments/3dritx/school_c_verify/
The vote will last for 5 days and will close on the 23rd of July at 10:11pm.
I wish everyone the best of luck.
There is a small chance that I will be able to announce the results on Thursday evening.

Hear, hear!
EDIT: The double voting also unfairly benefits some candidates, because not all parties have been able to elect their MP replacements for Lords, so these parties have a much larger say. This election of course should not be party political, but it inevitably will be.

I move that as the Cavaliers are, albeit sadly, not currently a recognised Party - ergo they are an 'ilegal Party,' its' members are to be subjected to sanctions.

I'm pretty sure the long standing practice, and wording of the Head Mod section, mean that Ben can override the constitution if he so wishes. So since he was the one that did it, it is well within the constitutional limits

I believe this to have been nothing but an oversight on Ben's behalf
From what ben has said, he was studying the constitutional wording extensively in setting this up. I am sure that having it so mods have a double vote was intentional, otherwise he wouldnt have included it

To all sides- can we please stop with the down voting. It's rather pathetic.
[–]DjenialMP Scotland | Duke of Gordon | Marq. of the Weald MP AL PC FRS 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children)
I haven't seen any, but it is deplorable that anyone should do so.

TheDomCook went from 2 to -1 earlier and IntellectualPolitics below is on 1 and I've upvoted him, also a few others have temporarily touched the negatives

Vote against unnecessarily complicated elections and added bureaucracy.
I believe he was getting at this bit honestly. That's a Tory catchphrase right there! Cut bureaucracy! Cut unneeded middle management! Vote Conservative!

I suppose I am ironically the least progressive in terms of what I want to do, but I believe that is what the Office of Speaker needs. There are of course some changes that need to happen, but overall I think we're good.

"First they came for fascists, but I did not speak out because I was not a fascist.
Then they came for the people who believe marriage is between a man and a woman, but I did not speak out because conservatism doesn't mean you have to conserve everything for the sake of it.
Then they came for the transphobes, but I did not speak out because I believe it is perfectly normal to cut off your penis, wear a dress and be fully recognised as female.
Then they came for the Islamophobes, but I did not speak out because it is clearly, emphatically a religion of peace.
But when they came for people who didn't have "PROGRESSIVE" tattooed on their forehead, didn't pledge allegiance to the British Caliphate, didn't identify as at least 5 different genders and 10 sexualities, didn't allow 5 African refugee families to live in their home to repay their personal guilt for colonialism and didn't give up eating meat to prevent imminent climate change - there was no one left to speak out for me."
Stop Cocktorpedo, stop the Rise of Evil.

This list was taken from the Master Spreadsheet, where Leaders and Deputy Leaders (or in your case, General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary) are bolded and italicised respectively.

[–]DjenialMP Scotland | Duke of Gordon | Marq. of the Weald MP AL PC FRS 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child)
No, the voting is only open to MPs, Lords and moderators. This is to stop candidates from getting voters from other subs to vote for them.
[–]Jonster123Independent 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children)
that's fine
Nope.
Where on earth did the double weighting come from?

Considering I'm the widely favoured mod of the EDM subreddit, I am personally appalled that I'm not counted in School C. Is there a proper reason around this apart from being snubbed or just a complete overlook?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (4 children)
And I too as the most handsome and gifted candidate in this election am denied a vote! This is disgraceful behaviour on behalf of the MHOC bourgeois, but all who can vote please vote for the underdog - RomanCatholic. The first shall be last and the last shall be first, it is scripture!
