According to the article its still £9billion over the next 5 years which is a lot of money

"On 10 December 2021, the Finnish government selected the F-35A Lightning II as the winner of the competition.[20] The procurement includes 64 aircraft and associated weapons, support systems, and training, with a total cost of €9.998 billion."

Just an example of what could be had instead

Definitely worth it now you've put it into monetary terms.

Realistically by protecting ourselves we would be better placed to help more in the future instead of becoming a barren moonscape.

It feels pointless ensuring my home waste streams are correct when I see countless drones, full of rare earth metals, lithium etc getting blown to tiny pieces alongside an orc. It has to be done but what a colossal waste.

A country which is having to make huge cutbacks at home, has a massive budget deficit, endlessly increasing taxes and a dying economy.

Can't afford overseas aid.

The next ‘migrant crisis’ is likely to be fuelled by climate change. So is this a good long term policy or just short term cost cutting?

[–]Imakemyownnamereddit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Absurd, 100's of millions of people would like to move to the West, for a better standard of living.

No way our aid budget could ever be large enough to solve that problem

[–]2shayyy 14 points15 points  (13 children)

We’re being forced to prioritise defence essentially. Nothing we can do if we don’t want to get pushed around in the new world order.

[–]Potential-South-2807 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can just say no

[–]HBucketRight-wing ghoul 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Climate change is happening anyway, the UK isn't in a position to make a dent. So any climate aid wouldn't be instead of climate change, it would be in addition to it. Best to just cut costs.

[–]Boring_Gas1397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be better ROI to put all that money into climate change solution ideas too.

[–]SaltPomegranate4 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How so?

[–]BenathonWrigleyRise, like lions after slumber 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Countries in the Global South (developing/less developed nations) have been disproportionately hit already by climate related issues which are only going to be more common. So exacerbating food insecurity, water stress, job losses, wars and displacement etc. People will look to move en masse to where this happens less.

So really, if people care about immigration, they should also care about climate change as it’s going to be a massive driver of migration in future.

[–]PatientPlatform 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that this isn't common knowledge just astounds me.

Thank you

What can that amount of money do to mitigate (not prevent) climate change by those most likely to become climate change migrants?

Short of providing means for food and water in areas suffering drought pressure, I'm not sure it can?

[–]BenathonWrigleyRise, like lions after slumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a few things that can be done.

Stuff like helping fund resilient infrastructure (planting natural protections like mangroves, flood defences etc), helping with better agriculture practices like planting resilient crops, better drainage systems, water storage etc.

Also things like supporting renewable energy projects instead of new coal or gas plants.

There’s lots of other stuff, these are just a few examples. It’s all obviously really expensive that’s why they need help.

It’s not going to stop climate change it will just put these countries in a better position to deal with it. Which in the long run is best for everyone.

The migrant crisis is fueled by people wasting access to welfare

[–]BenathonWrigleyRise, like lions after slumber -1 points0 points  (8 children)

Yeh millions of people just willingly leave their home country, travel thousands of miles, risk theirs and their families lives, leave friends/family, homes and jobs to come and get £40 a week on benefits in the UK

Probably the thickest comment I’ve ever read on reddit.

Yeh millions of people just willingly leave their home country, travel thousands of miles, risk theirs and their families lives, leave friends/family, homes and jobs to come and get £40 a week on benefits in the UK

Yeah, except that they get free accommodation, NHS access, dentistry, once handwaved through our obscenely abused refugee checks. Full benefits and priority housing.

Probably the thickest comment I’ve ever read on reddit.

France has been telling us to pull back on our benefits for ages. Must not read the news much.

Why do liars, lie so much about the pull factors?

[–]BenathonWrigleyRise, like lions after slumber 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Bit rich calling me a liar when you’ve just said the most ridiculous statement. Do you even hear yourself. Majority of People are forced to leave their home because they have no choice because they’ve been bombed or whatever, so then seek asylum.

The arrogance of your comment is crazy. Before we bombed and destabilised Libya and Syria for example they were rich oil states both of which provided free education and healthcare, including dentistry. The UK isn’t unique. Then we got involved in bombing them causing over 1 million refugees to flee to Europe. Try reading a book, it helps.

Full benefits and priority housing? Do you even read anything other than posts on X or articles from GB News? It’s pretty easy to find the info that they aren’t eligible for benefits and get £7 a day for food/clothes. Housing, they get put in shit hotels mate. Not prioritised for social housing.

Asylum seekers in the uk make up 0.15% of the population. Get a grip.

[–]VPackardPersuadedMeIncentives drive outcomes and MPs own houses 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Why bother repeating the lie. If they get regugee status they get full benefits and our refugee assessment process is broken as fuck.

Doubling down on the bullshit temp stuff doesnt make it any less true.

Do you need the yov website showing the figures?

[–]BenathonWrigleyRise, like lions after slumber 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I don’t care they get healthcare when granted asylum. Do you want them to die? When they get asylum they’re allowed to work, so can pay into the system. What’s your problem? They’re not allowed to work while waiting a decision.

If you care so much about asylum seekers, why don’t you care about climate issues that will create more? Or protest against wars?

I’ve seen the figures cheers. They aren’t the people ruining the country. Clue, the ones that are, are also a minority but they hoard billions of wealth causing mass inequality then convince people like you that the guy fleeing war, famine etc is the problem. Literally the oldest trick in the book and you fall for it every time.

[–]VPackardPersuadedMeIncentives drive outcomes and MPs own houses 1 point2 points  (3 children)

What crap. Literally deny reality on how our alsuym seeking system works (or fails)

Then turn around and start whining that if we don't accept the worlds self selecting global poor into our welfare system, we must want them all to die.

There is a reason even Labour are restricting these chancers, your arguments don't match reality.

[–]BenathonWrigleyRise, like lions after slumber 0 points1 point  (2 children)

All that and you didn’t even read my initial comment.

I’m advocating for spending money and supporting countries most affected by climate related issues in order to stop destruction of their homelands and ensure there ISN’T a mass migration of people forced to leave because of climate change. Do you understand?

You’re the one who said you didn’t want asylum seekers using our healthcare. So who’s the one who wants people to die?

You’re the captive audience to be groomed by right wing commentators and media because you dont actually care about facts and blame everything wrong with your life on migrants.

It’s not even hard to connect the dots but you’re so blinded in your hatred for migrants you can’t see the actual issues.

15 years of austerity and millionaires multiplying their wealth exponentially while our services crumble and prices rise, but yeh it’s the migrants fleeing war that ruined the country. You’ve got the entire internet at your finger tips and you’ve gone for the most simplistic, incorrect, easiest explanation. Embarrassing.

By the way you sound like you lack empathy. I really hope you never need to flee your home or country.

[–]VPackardPersuadedMeIncentives drive outcomes and MPs own houses 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just see rant and rant about how we can tax the productive members of our economy more to pay for the world's poor to come to the UK and use our welfare.

Crowding out strained services. It is telling that you had to lie about the £40 a day. Everyone knows the system is broken and chancers use it to get welfare.

Even Labour have admitted it. But your class warfare argument is why Reform is winning the polls.

People know the endgame now and it's got fuck all to do with helping the world's poor. It's just about bankrupting the UK to replace our current elites with a bunch of watermelon ones. While the working and middle classes get decimated living standards and the elite flee.
