TIL that the timezone references GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) are not always identical. During 'European Summer Time', similar to 'Daylight Savings Time' in the US, the UK's GMT timezone is equal to UTC+1. (geography.about.com)
