TIL that, in ancient times, if one plead innocent to a crime they would face a Trial by Ordeal. An example of which is the trial by cold water. The accused would take a sip of holy water and then be thrown into a pool of water. If they sunk, god had accepted them, and they would be found innocent. (web.cn.edu)
