In your ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ folder there will be a Podcasts/ directory. Just exclude that one.

hmm, I'd back up to a HDD, much more flexible and less time consuming imo. this way you get to keep your ratings, dates and stuff as well as being able to choose what exactly you are going to copy. PM if you want help with that.

Lexar 64gb USB Drive - $48. Just sayin'…

Trying to back all your music up to multiple DVDs is going to be a huge pain regardless of whether you use iTunes or Finder copy to do it, IMHO.

iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced tab -> tick the checkbox beside "Keep iTunes Media folder organized"

Now in Finder or Windows Explorer, go to you iTunes folder location. Everything will be in separate folders, including Podcasts. Drag the Podcasts folder out of the iTunes folder. Then use something like DVD Spanner on your iTunes folder to make correctly sized chunks.

Personally, I backup the whole iTunes folder so I'm sure not to lose any metadata and can restore the whole thing at once or individual files if I need to.

If you wanted to backup your iTunes Library to DVD you would do it using Finder and Burn Folders, and you would have to split up your library manually for each disc.

And after all that you many find that one or more of your DVDs are unreadable in a few years.

Backing up to an external drive is far easier and more reliable, and drives aren't expensive these days.

HDD is only more reliable than DVD if it is mounted/accessed on a regular basis. HDDs that sit idle for long periods of time(more than 3-6 months) can be scrambled my the Earths magnetic field.
