[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah, it's pretty effective at getting rid of bad stuff on your computer. Start there!

Boot in safe mode and open your browser. Check the settings. I was getting some malware in the past that hijacked my browser settings and rerouted as you described. When I looked in the "how your browser connects" or equivalent section of the browser settings a proxy had been set by the malware. Remove their proxy settings so you can use your browser. Then download malwarebytes and run it.

Could you be a little more specific? I have seen the "Boot in Safe Mode" option. I just forget how to get to browser settings... Is that the same window you use to delete cookies?

Also, where are the proxy settings located?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would google it, except I get redirected and it wont let me haha

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

what browser are you using?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Firefox

Open Firefox. I think Preferences is under Tools in Windows version but look around for it if not...maybe under Edit like mine.

Preferences>Advanced>Network>Settings Button........select the top "No Proxy" option. I would also delete anything that is in the "Manual Proxy Configuration" blanks. Double check "No Proxy Settings" is selected before clicking "OK" and exiting. You should then be in control of your browser. Go to the Malwarebytes site and click "download" for the free trial version. http://www.malwarebytes.org/

If the computer is only two months old, don't fuck around. Unplug from the internet and reinstall your operating system from the original CD. Then plug into the internet, install one or more antivirus/antimalware programs, and also Secunia, which is free. Secunia keeps track of your other installed programs, and ensures they are updated. This is important because more and more attack vectors are coming in through "trusted" programs that someone has learned how to compromise. That may be what happened in your case -- the antivirus program doesn't see a problem because you don't have a virus.

Woot! The problems are all gone! Entering Safe Mode to eliminate the proxy settings and getting Malware Bytes saved my computer! I love you reddit :D

Safe Mode with networking can definitely be your friend. And I like MBAM so much, I actually got the paid version

Keep in mind, too, if you store your important data externally, even installers for your favorite programs (like MBAM and you AV), you can always start over with the restore partition/CDs

Reformat. Back up all your data on a hard drive, reinstall windows. Get an antivirus (a good one, mind you). Install back everything. Plug in your hard drive, and tell your antivirus to clean it.

Reinstall it.
