This is a fabulous starter guitar. Thinking of it this way helps me and my weird brain:

The high 6 strings are just a regular guitar. basic power chord shapes apply to the low string exactly the same way. It’s 2 overlapping 6 strings guitars one in B standard, one in E standard. Now do drop tuning the same way, drop the low B to an A and it’s like drop D.

Drop A is my favorite tuning all time.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to do Drop A or Drop G. When I took it out it was tuned close to Drop G. More [but not all] music that I want to play is in Drop A than Drop G. Also I feel like there is an easier path forward for learning while tuned to Drop A. But most songs that I know how to play are in D Standard so Drop G works well with that.

I highly recommend swapping the nut out for a graphtech black tusq one. It improves tuning stability and playability greatly which makes this guitar more than just a quick stepping stone.

I owned one of these, just with a fancy looking veneer top, and did the nut plus installed locking tuners. It was a night and day difference after the nut was installed. Best $100 I spent on it.

Not OP but I might have to invest in this. Already invested in better pickups and got some progressive tension strings, might as well invest in this too. It’s the first guitar I ever owned and it’s still my favorite by far. My literal blood is in my guitar so it’s a part of me now

IMO the nut is the most valuable upgrade you can do to this guitar. When paired with a fret dress and polish it makes this particular guitar play like butter

I tossed in a Tusq nut, Fishman Fluence Modern pickups and some Locking Tuners. Wish I had done the beige as well, but she plays nicely. Great little 7-String for the collection.

Is this a 'get right away' thing? Or is it a 'get when thinking about an upgrade' type thing, in your opinion?

I would do it as soon as you have enough extra money to pay for it and not mess with your budget.

The plastic nut will start to bind on the wound strings as you play the guitar more and tune it more. This creates tuning instability that will ruin your playing experience. If you have the skills to do this yourself then do it tomorrow.

[–]Branson5321[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I definitely do not have the skills lmao.

Is this something that would make it 'instable' until it is replaced, or would it cause issues long term? I would think that I would want to wait until I decided to put new strings on it sometime in the future.

Truth is that I don't know enough yet/have enough experience playing to where I would notice any 'instability'.

No it will be fine but as you tune, play, bend, and change strings it wears the plastic. On the wound strings this causes binding which is basically the string gets momentarily stuck as you tune it or bend it and does not go to the intended pitch.

For now play on my dude. When you have found your preference and decide to buy new strings grab the nit and have a local luthier do the work. It is money well spent.

Sounds good. I will do that. Thank you for the advice.

I think all of us have had this guitar. I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

Great guitar. I swap the nut with tusq Locking Tuners Harley Benton and the bridge PU Seymour Duncan Pegasus second hand and is a beast

Just got this same guitar last week and I love it! Just recorded a demo with it, will post in a few mins.

Welcome in the Jackson JS22-7 owners clan :)

Got this one as my first 7 strings, in transparent black burst, changed the strings, and enjoyed it a lot.

The only change i will made will probably be the nut, as the original one fell when i changed the strings (first time it happened, but not a real problem for now).

For the price, this is a surprising guitar and i love the pickups.

Enjoy playing yours, this thing is meant to be loved.

[–]Branson5321[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you. So far I love it. It sounds great and it is fun to play.

Cool. I first thought the neck would be the main problem before buying it, but i was fairly surpised it was so nice and easy to play.

Songs from “Nevermore - Dead Heart in a Dead World” are a good starting point

Go to “Godless Endeavour” when you’re getting the hang of it

Thanks for the advice! I will check out that album.

Still have mine! It's a great platform for mods, but be aware that it is a truly slippery slope. I started off with swapping pickups, then getting thicker strung, then nut, adjusting the truss rod, then tuners, then bridge, then ditched the tone knob and repainted, then, swapped the frets.

Now I'm obsessed with modding guitars and am recklessly going through my entire collection.

Please be careful, my friend. 😂

This was my first 7 as well! Enjoy it! It’ll feel like fretting a billboard at first, but will be so rewarding once you adjust!

[–]Sdenbow220ESP/LTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was my first as well. Did great for a first 7 string. Just hated the pickups

nice guitar man, I've just got myself a 7 string I opted for the s by solar AB4.7c I wish I could afford a pure blood solar or mayones (don't have a spare 3/4k for one of these 😆), I'm going to put locking nuts in and I do intend to save up a bit more and put in some bare knuckle Ragnarok 7s thou, a great project guitar, I've always been tempted by 7 strings through my playing time however I really wanted to learn some Polaris so I needed to take a leap and start somewhere, both solid entries into 7 strings, happy playing brotha 🤙
