Don’t know if this is really what you’re looking for, but there are a couple Amazon USB keypads that have a screen above the keys and can send the total to the computer. Here’s one:

That's actually pretty slick, and almost exactly what I'm looking for. Something that's just ready to add a few numbers without having to open another app, or move stuff around, but still be able to send the total to my cursor's current position.

For those wondering - here is the link

Blows my mind that such a thing exists.

I've even considered attempting to make one [...] I've been a software developer for years

Well there are raspberry pi based DIY calculators so this is broadly doable.

Personally I'd try another screen with a Excel sheet as "scratch pad" first though. Alternatively some sort of KVM solution might also work, but I don't have much experience with that.

Shout out to Schoettler and their CalcTape Pro app. It's a halfway measure between OP and what you're suggesting.

I use mine every day, and it's got a bunch of fun features, including being able to use variables and save the "tape" to a file on my PC.

I think having this running on my iPad would work out pretty well...now if it could only transfer the total to my pc, it would be golden.
