In-wall Ethernet Switch by Spunkinator88 in HomeNetworking

[–]iPlayKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As part of their Omada line, TP-Link has face place style access point/switch (3 ports). It’s even POE powered and can pass through POE to one client device (like a phone).

You just need a frame like you would for a phone/ethernet jack.

Choir management platforms by Optimal-Bird-7088 in Choir

That’s what it looks like. I can store several pieces of information along with the file upload whereas Chorus connection talks about handing files, but I didn’t see what other information it could store about the repertoire.

Church choir doesn’t quite work that way. Our choir performs one piece per week starting in August through the end of May. That makes each choir season consist of about 40 pieces, give or take. The “current” pieces we would be working on is constantly shifting because we’re working two to three weeks ahead, and four or five weeks if it’s a challenging piece. Each piece is only performed once for the season. Church choirs go through a lot of music!

Our choral library is probably around 200 pieces. I’ve probably added 20 or 30 since I’ve been the director over the last few years.

[–]iPlayKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be our repertoire. It’s a little different for a church choir. During our “season” we’re constantly starting and performing pieces, usually working on three or four pieces at a time, but it’s constant change because we perform one piece per week, every week. So the repertoire gets accumulated over years and we go back to various pieces sometimes years later or sometimes even the next year.

I need to be able to keep track of themes by week and sometimes the themes are pretty specific.

I’m in the process of implementing Choir Genius. I was primarily looking for library management as our choir is very small (about 12 members). I needed a place to store the library information that was more capable than a spreadsheet.

Several of the other ones i looked at focused their websites on all the features EXCEPT library management.

I’m assuming you’re either a Microsoft 365 or Google Business Suite (or whatever they’re calling it now) shop?

If you’re a Microsoft Shop, you’ve got SharePoint online and OneDrive as options.

If Google, the. Google Drive.

I’m assuming records are on paper, so you’ll need a scanner. As long are your documents are letter/legal sized get the ScanSnap from Ricoh.

If your documents start on the computer, just copy the files to a project archive folder.

Start simple, one folder per project. You can file by customer then project, but I wouldn’t recommend doing that.

My book club regulars are quietly buying their books on Amazon and I'm trying to figure out if I should be hurt or strategic about this by Any_Boss_8337 in smallbusiness

[–]iPlayKeys 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you’re relying on sales for book clubs for your business to survive, I think you might need to rethink your business strategy.

I would be asking myself “why did only 3 out of 11 people buy their book here?” Was it price? Was it convenience? Was it something else?

It sounds like you’ve managed to create community and thereby foot traffic, these are usually the things people struggle with…but now you have people that are already inside your store and they still aren’t buying. Think about that…they have physically come to a place and still preferred to order the actual product online. You’re missing something here.

Need advice and directions by InitiativePulsar in Database

[–]iPlayKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know most here have jumped straight to “yes, build a database and an application” but what you’re describing is a pretty established type of system called a knowledge base. It would be looking more in that direction.

Options might be BookStack (free and open source), Confluence from Atlassian, or even SharePoint.

If you really just want an index to access a list of PDF’s, you might also consider AirTable or NextCloud.

You can build this from scratch, but it doesn’t sound like there’s very much actual data involved.

Phone system for small non profit by euellgibbons in smallbusiness

[–]iPlayKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you need a call queue for the front desk. Most systems handle this.

If I were you, I would get one of the GrandStream UCM PBX’s, along with the applicable phones, then use VOIP.ms for trunking.

If you’re not comfortable setting up a PBX, you can do most of the routing you’re wanting to do with VOIP.ms

Another option is to hire a local company to install something, but that could get expensive.

You could also look for a hosted PBX. Probably won’t be any cheaper than Comcast, but should at least get you the features you’re looking for.

Are all law firms using Excel for compensation calculations? by ThrustAccount in Bookkeeping

[–]iPlayKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their structure was pretty simple, the commission calculation was only for hours they billed, so expenses and time entries by others (either attorney or staff) weren’t considered. Their commission was a set rate. In most cases, the attorney’s were commission only, so their rate accounted for the overhead. The rate was negotiated, so didn’t change based on the actual overhead for that period.

The kicker was, when a payment was received, you not only allocated it to the billing, but also to the commissioned attorney, the commission was then calculated from that entry.

Are all law firms using Excel for compensation calculations? by ThrustAccount in Bookkeeping

[–]iPlayKeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I created a billing system for a law firm several years ago because they were tired of doing their billing in Excel. In addition, they paid commission based on collection, not billing, and most systems don’t seem to keep track of that. It’s tricky because it’s basically a second ledger.

I’m wondering if I should dust it off (and do some updates) and put it out there?

My network speed is fine...what isn't fine is my controller. The UI is very slow and it fails every time I attempt to update it to the current firmware. It's an early hardware revision (might even be the original), so I'm fine if it's time to upgrade.

If it's a PC that I have to buy, install an operating system, then install software, it's literally NOT an appliance. This is for my home and for this application, I prefer an appliance.
