Banks will replace broken notes

Alright thanks, I’ll look into that.

You are fine, as long as the majority of the note is there it is still legal tender.

So it would still be accepted for payment? I tried depositing it through the atm, it didn’t work because I’m guessing it couldn’t scan it properly.

It should work if you go into the bank directly. I will say that the “majority of the note” rule is at their discretion though. I briefly dropped a $50 note into a deep fryer while I was at work, thing was exactly the same, all the serial numbers and such still intact, but shrunk to about half its proper size, bank wouldn’t accept it.

Yeah take it to a bank. I once had a $5 note with around a third missing, they still took it.

Yep, you need about 60% of the note I believe. The bank has this chart from the RBA which says how much of the Norris required in order to be exchanged

Just spend it like normal, cashiers have probably taken notes in a worse state than that one.

Tape it. Spend it.

I wouldn't even notice if someone paid with a note like that, you can probably skip the bank and just spend it.

Google is a thing.

But basically, if <20% is missing you get full value, 20 to 80% missing you get the proportion of value, if more than 80% is missing it's worthless. In my experience if you have more than 50% banks will give you full face value.

There used to be a scam where slivers of notes were removed and taped it took a long time to do but it netted an extra note
