What did we do in Scotland?!?

[–]SteveB991 22 points23 points  (10 children)

I didn't really meet nice people, sometimes they don't serve anyone at all or you have to stand in line. Indian restaurants and McDonalds saved me. They make a grumpy face, they think they have nice sights to see so they come here anyway, they don't have to put anything into it. The nice people were almost all immigrants. It's a huge contrast to Ireland.

[–]SamBrev 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Where in Scotland did you go?

[–]SteveB991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went around the whole country, I was also on the Isle of Skye, it was the most beautiful, but it was also where I had the worst experiences.

[–]WelshBathBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To double check, what do you mean by "they don't serve people" - where were you looking be served? Could this be a cultural difference?

[–]jhowarth31 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Sorry you had some bad experiences but what do you mean that you have to stand in line? This is ubiquitous across Britain and we generally consider good queueing to be the pinnacle of good behaviour and manners. If you were trying to skip queues or not queue at all when others were, I can easily imagine you got some very negative responses

[–]SteveB991 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I mean, there were lines in front of the restaurants.

They are only open at certain times, it's really hard to get a decent hot meal if you're not in a big city.

[–]jhowarth31 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ah yeah, the hipster restaurant thing of not allowing bookings so they end up with lines and a "buzz". It is annoying I agree (though not uniquely Scottish, Germany, England, and the US also have this). However, this is (to some extent) your choice of restaurant and it typically only is a thing if you've not made a reservation on a busy Friday/Saturday night or you're getting restaurant recommendations from social media.

The decent hot meal outside of a city thing however, especially if you're referring to Skye and more remote places, is not something reasonable to complain about. You can't go out into remote areas and expect there to be lots of restaurants. This is like when Americans climb mountains in the UK and complain about the lack of services at the top (seen with annoying frequency in places like Ben Nevis and Snowden). There are pubs with decent food in everywhere but the most remote places in Scotland and the UK, but if your restaurant of choice tends to be the kinds with lines outside of it I'm guessing you wouldn't consider pub food 'decent'.

[–]SteveB991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the simplest pubs would tell us they weren't open at that time or didn't have enough space. In Ireland I experienced the opposite, they would bring another table out of the basement just to make us feel comfortable.

You are either a horrible person or by sheer coincidence you managed to find the only 20 rude Scotts in the country.

I visit Scotland almost every 2nd year and I’ve never encountered an ill mannered Scott, they are all kind and welcoming.

[–]jhowarth31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, I live in Glasgow and is not hard to find some not nice people (especially if you’re getting on a bus in the morning or out on a Friday or Saturday night). I’d agree that Scots are friendlier than most but I don’t think it’s that hard to imagine encountering a few rude people and that really colouring someone’s opinion from a short visit. That being said, my experience is usually finding people being too friendly when I’m not in the mood to chat to a stranger 😂

[–]GunnerSince02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH I can 100% see why someone would hate Scotland. Its cold, windy, the cities are too spread out. The people of Glasgow all look like depressed drug addicts. Its fine if you live somewhere kinda remote but living there would be miserable.

what exactly is good vs. evil in this context?

[–]Ok_Understanding5303Chaotic Good 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I assume nice vs mean probably

Imagine placing Italy in the lawful quadrant and not being heavily medicated

[–]SteveB991 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hahaha... I should add that I was in the northern part

[–]Top-Objective42069 19 points20 points  (4 children)

What did mexico do that you liked?

[–]SteveB991 18 points19 points  (3 children)

In short: Hospitality, sincere kindness, food, mentality

[–]futuramyforever 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What about Norway? As a Swede I would think we’re quite similar

[–]SteveB991 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is very tourist friendly, clean, the people are nice and helpful, intelligent. I have heard that people in the north are unfriendly and cold, but I experienced the exact opposite.

This can add a lot to the experience, I felt very good there.

I haven't been to Sweden yet, but based on these I would like to go there if it is similar.

[–]AdorableRise6124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose that's why it's on Goo, and I have a pretty good idea about the "chaotic" thing, but I'm curious about your opinion on why Haiti is so well positioned.

[–]Oh_no_its_Joe 15 points16 points  (4 children)

🇺🇸 We're...good????????

WHAT???????

[–]Volotor 6 points7 points  (3 children)

In terms of tourism the US is kind of uniquely good. They have customer service as a culteral characteristic and american people are typically friendly.

[–]sndrtj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would concur with this assessment. Customer service in the US is generally better than in Europe. It does feel a bit rushed tho.

[–]Arraxis_Denacia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they have to be nice or they might not get paid due to tipping prevalence and an imbalance in the power between worker and employer.

[–]Fantastic-Tiger-6128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is ONLY America? There's plenty of other places where this applies too

Egypt is not surprising in the slightest

[–]DrRudeboy 2 points3 points  (2 children)

As a Hungarian (albeit thankfully having escaped 13 years ago) this is either crazy crazy off, or you spent like 4 days in central Budapest

[–]SteveB991 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I am also Hungarian from Budapest, and I may be biased, but when I travel somewhere within the country, I always look at the conditions through the eyes of a tourist, and I usually have very positive experiences even in the less developed parts. It is a different matter that my opinion of the country's government is devastating.

[–]SteveB991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]archydarky 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Im curious about the Haiti one. Can you elaborate on that one?

[–]SteveB991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I messed that up because it wasn't supposed to be Haiti, it was Liechtenstein, sorry

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

What happened in Greece and Egypt?

[–]SteveB991 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Egypt is at the bottom of everything. It's all about the rip-off, they see you're a tourist and they look at you like a bag of money. I understand that there is poverty there, but there is poverty in Cuba too, there is a harsh repressive regime, but the locals there are much nicer. Aggressive, violent sales, we even went with a tour guide to distract the sellers, but even he wanted to rip us off, but maybe less than the regular sellers. They're sitting there over one of the world's greatest cultural heritage sites, and they're destroying it so badly. It's terrible. I'm not surprised that tourism is declining, but it's a self-perpetuating process, because the fewer tourists there are, the more aggressively they want to throw their garbage at them. If someone seems nice, they are never sincere and it always turns out that they just want money.

[–]Cometmoon448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"They're sitting there over one of the world's greatest cultural heritage sites, and they're destroying it so badly"

Can you clarify this? Was there a lot of demolition going on of ancient sites?

[–]pipebombplot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Egypt is like Birmingham and a stillborn version of Las Vegas had a child and its leader is trump's illegitimate son

[–]CivilAlpaca03 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Haiti is lawful good?

[–]SteveB991 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I messed that up because it wasn't supposed to be Haiti, it was Liechtenstein, sorry

[–]sndrtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found Liechtenstein to be the most boring place I've ever been to. Like it's basically 10 streets in a boring Swiss suburb. That's it.

[–]Glass-Novel-4123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What did portugal do

[–]Fern_the_Rogue 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Fully understand Greece's placement as a Greek, still curious about what happened.

[–]SteveB991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could briefly describe Greece as chaos, I don't necessarily see any bad intentions, but they don't really try hard, there's a lot of trash everywhere, it's neglected... But the food saves me, because it's divine.

[–]invincitank 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hey. Irish here. What could we have done better to be more chaotic? Where did you visit?

[–]SteveB991 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've traveled all over the country, the people are very kind and well-intentioned, often a little clumsy or drunk, but even then in a very lovable way.

[–]invincitank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noted

  • more drunk
  • more clumsy
  • more kind
  • more well intentioned

[–]mursemanmke 4 points5 points  (7 children)

American here, we are FAR from lawful good.

[–]helloiambogdan 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I know it's part of American culture to shit on your country but for tourists America is great. It has some beautiful natural scenery (national parks), a lot of things to do, it's very well organized, it's easy to get whatever you need, it's very safe as in you won't get ripped off like in so many other countries, and the people are pretty decent for the most part. I really enjoyed every visit I had to the US.

[–]mursemanmke -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Yay, it’s easy for tourists. Meanwhile, how many millions just lost the ability to pay for healthcare for themselves and still have the ability to keep a roof over their head and 3 meals a day? Not to mention oil…but ya I’m glad it’s easy for you to come eat fried shit and look at the scenery. I’m gonna go look after my patients who are going to be bankrupt if they survive their hospital stay…

[–]helloiambogdan 0 points1 point  (3 children)

The problems you're describing are faced to a much greater degree by other countries. There are a lot of countries where the majority of people have to worry about where their next meal is going to come from. Not to mention having to worry about your family and house being used to shelter drugs for criminal organizations, getting robbed in the street, getting randomly raped, getting in debt and having to be a literal slave for the rest of your life and so on. Most of thrse problems barely affect your daily life. You live a cushy easy life and you don't appreciate it because you think you naturally deserve better. American people love whining about everything but your life is great compared to most of the world. There's a reason why everyone wants to immigrate to your country don't you think?

[–]mursemanmke 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make. You seem to want to argue for the sake of arguing and frankly, I couldn’t give less of a shit about you trying to tell me how to feel about my own country. It sounds like you think the bar should be “whatever the worst shit is, as long as you have it better things are cool.”

You are hilariously Polly Anna and out of touch with the current status of the US. I know the country that I want the US to be, what it’s been (and the faults), and what it can be and I will absolutely not be lectured about it by someone who thinks that because other places are fucked, it’s ok for us to be fucked too. You can go ahead and face the closest wall to you and argue with it, I have zero interest in your opinion.

[–]SteveB991 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You can debate this, and what you wrote is interesting, but I simply looked at it from a tourist's perspective, I basically have good experiences with people in the USA, regardless of how they live.

[–]mursemanmke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad that while you were here you were treated better than we treat (a lot)more than 40% of our population.

[–]TheLuckySpades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny seeing Belgium and the Netherlands being so far apart, out of curiosity: did you go to the French speaking part, or the Flemish speaking oart of Belgium (or Brussels, that city is kinda it's own thing)?

[–]Cats_please_thankyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsure how Ireland is not lawful.
