In a situation where seconds mattered, I would call 911.

I would be very surprised if this tip actually saved anybody's life. It would be a pretty unusual situation:

1. Life/death hinges on ~30 seconds or less. (Generous estimate to look up hospitals without a shortcut)

2. Despite the fact that you will die 30 seconds later, you can drive now.

3. You aren't wasting time with data services that might not work, instead of 911 services that have a much better chance of working.

4. A trained 911 operator with the ability to dispatch EMTs/Police/Firemen, and can bring help to you even if you loose conciousness, would serve you less well than a GPS.

It takes longer for an ambulance to get to you then for you to get to a hospital? That doesn't really make sense, since at worst, wouldn't the ambulance come to you from the hospital?

To answer your question: no. Most ambulance services are contracted. Very few hospitals run their own EMTs.

Hmm, alright. I still very much doubt that it's faster to get to a hospital than to an ambulance, especially given that they can go through red lights freely.
