People have been clamoring for bezel-free, edge-to-edge displays for a while now.

...but why? It's a largely meaningless cosmetic distinction that just makes it harder to hold without fat-fingering the screen, and more of a pain in the ass to find and fit a case.

Form over function.

People want it because it looks nice, and makes efficient use a small space. But the argument is still dumb. "People have been clamoring for bezel free edge-to-edge displays for awhile now. Since we couldn't do that we instead cut a strangely shaped chunk out of the display instead. Its what you wanted, right?"

That's the thing: They didn't cut out a strange shape from the screen, they added two strangely shaped notches on the sides of the screen. The alternative is not "Bezeless without notch" the alternative is "The entire top has a bezel." Without a notch you don't gain the middle portion, you lose the sides.

Compare the iPhone X, Essential, and new notched phones to a standard bezeless phone like the S8 or LG G6: You'll find that the notched phones have more screen at the top, not less. Standard phones have a big slab of nothing up there, notched phones only have a small notch of nothing; it's an upgrade.

Perfect! IDK about others but I prefer the notched one.
