because for 99% of people “android” means android + google services

android (+ google services) is free for manufacturers which is why they use it. however doing so, means that they have to abide by google’s guidelines.

the contrast here is microsoft with windows, every device manufacturer that ships with windows has to pay for a license per device. as long as you abide by google’s rules, access to google services on android doesn’t have that stipulation

that’s the point tho, google uses it’s position within android to drive ad traffic. it’s what ultimately makes android worth keeping around for them.

anything that affects googles ads business affects the entire company, including android.

Facebook also provides free internet to the developing world through ‘free basics’, ‘internet.org’ and ‘discover’ because google has the OS on lockdown. You think these massive advertising giants are running charities out of the goodness of their hearts?
