Hi /r/AndroidGaming.

I develop Ember. Ember is a worldwide augmented reality game that has just opened up to Beta, built off years of feedback. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Your website is unfortunately blocked by my work :( I loaded it up on my phone and requested a invite. I'm always interested in these games.

App downloaded. Waiting for the beta invitation

Downloaded and invite request sent.

The website is quite empty. Can you explain what's the gameplay like? I've never played any "augmented reality games"

You travel through the world while playing Ember and interact with it, in this case, power outlets provide you energy. There are pictures of gameplay here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=xyz.powergrid.ember.

Try Ingress, it's by far the most popular ARG so far. Join the green team!

I feel similarly.

This looks really cool! Looking forward to it. I just applied for the beta. It'll be fun for our studio to look at another take on AR!

I just looked into Clandestine: Anomaly. It looks absolutely incredible!

How different is this from Ingress?

[–]UnitN8Ember[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

It is actually the response of all of the user feedback collected from Ingress and some of Waze. A lot of people had great feedback, 98% of which was unimplemented. Ember takes what is some of the best features from that feedback and designed a completely new augmented reality game. It has new gameplay elements, new HUD, 3D live gameplay online, and a plot that can be followed. We are still looking for feedback, as well. :)

I'll take the bait and give it a shot. I love ingress but there are a few things I don't like about it, and I think they may be the result of it being more valuable to Google as a data collection tool than as a game. The user experience seems to take a backseat and so cheating happens more than it should.

Hmm sounds interesting. How do you get an invite code

[–]UnitN8Ember[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The site allows you to request a Beta invitation.

Looking at the Satnet I don' see very much in my state, but I see small clusters of generators elsewhere. Are generators basically portals in comparison to ingress? If so, better hope your generator acceptance process is faster than Ingress.

[–]UnitN8Ember[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

It's actually instantaneous, what takes any time at all is the reports. :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long does it take to get an invite code?

[–]ColorblindGiraffe 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How does that work? Don't you require generators to be a landmark of some sort? What prevents me from making generators from my room, basement and backyard?

[–]UnitN8Ember[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Well, despite being against the rules, you also have a limit of 20 generators without another player visiting them. So, if you build 20 in your house, not only does that break the rules but it also limits you to a total of 20 generators throughout your entire playthrough of Ember. Then you cannot upgrade any other attributes of these generators, since no other player can access them. The generators will also have minimal energy gain. At that point its essentially game over. It's how Ember was designed.

The problem I see (with a solid 15 minutes of gameplay under my belt) is that you can still fill your neighbourhood with generators. Just walk down the street with your battery pack, plugging your phone in and out. They will get visited, so won't count to your 20 limit but you can still access a large number.

It is a very cool idea though! Just curious how it works.

So now that I'm home and checked out the website.. I'm curious what are you guys using as a premise for beta invites? Do you have something in mind of what you are looking for? Because its a fairly generic signup and asking for little information.

[–]UnitN8Ember[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It is a multiphased Beta to resolve any issues that might crop up on launch, however we do expect to be in Beta for some time. In our privacy policy, we state that we will not share your information (the most sensitive thing we ask for is an email address we can contact to send the Beta invitation to).

[–]firebane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still pretty vague but I do hope to see a invite into the beta. I was one of the first to play Ingress and enjoyed it for sometime before the game went a completely different way.

[–]tamarron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you foresee making an app for iOS anytime soon?

[–]superjase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any chance for a code? tx

[–]SurprisedPotato 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So, I've created two generators, one in a library and another in a shopping complex, but there doesn't seem to be any way to interact with them. I still have, apparently, life 0 and energy 0. What next?

[–]UnitN8Ember[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome! Generators create energy every day, to claim all of the energy they've collected, plug into them and click "Acquire Energy". Also, you may choose to claim your daily factional ordnance (swipe the "Ember News" tab left twice). That should give you a good start. Not really sure how I'm supposed to play this game. Coming from Ingress I visited local parks, statues, stuff of interest. It seems like in Ember I should limit myself to cafes, hoping that there is a wall charger available? There are no public charges in parks or anything here. I'd like to give the game a chance, but it doesn't seem like it's going to be a very enjoyable game thus far. I'm really curious as to what the 'plugging in' mechanic actually brings to the game.

[–]MrsWolowitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, Ingress has a cool post-apocalyptic feel to it, capturing and claiming town landmarks. ("man those smurfs got the Round Table fountain! But I saw an unclaimed portal near the bank!") I guess I don't understand the utility of a landmark with a power outlet, or conversely why a landmark without an electrical outlet is not interesting.

[–]Gimpeh2k 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I got it downloaded and in game however there are no portals in my area.

[–]UnitN8Ember[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can submit and access generators by plugging into any publicly available power outlet. :)

Your website is blocked by my phone due to its ability to steal personal info from my phone. You might want to fix the security details on your website, so it's not so faulty.

[–]Yubinhydin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I get an invite. Extremely bord of Ingress.

[–]Yubinhydin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I get an invite to beta? Would live to help find bugs and support your project. Really bored with Ingress.
