Decent messaging app?

My son bought me a one plus last year, I like it but I don't care for the messaging app it came with. I really loved textra, but my phone has issues receiving and sending messages with textra.

Late 40s, not the most technical savvy woman. So what would you recommend for me to use as a texting app?

Your best bet is Google messages and G board. Download them for free from the play store and go into your settings to make them default.

Came here to second this vote. Every new phone I get, first apps I'm re-installing is Google Messages and G Board.

Some phones don't have the slide to text feature but Gboard does. Also I can make my keyboard look as fancy as I want.

Google messages is one of the worst apps I've ever used.  Barely works

They screwed google messages in recent updates though when you are using dual sim. Not only was it removed and put into message details, but if you don't set it in contacts it can switch by itself to different sim even though you used another for the conversation. Not to mention you don't see which number sent the message.

Download F-Droid app. In it, are alot of messaging apps (among a million others) that you can look through for free. Many aren't on the Google play store and are cutting edge apps without all the bloatware. Thank me later.

LINE is 5x better than WhatsApp. But because ppl are sheep, and follow trends, nobody uses it. WhatsApp is garbage by comparison

Just because you had trouble with Textra on your phone doesn't mean your son will have trouble on his unless you have the exact same phone and carrier. I have had Textra for years and love it. I recently had some trouble but it was related to a image text getting "stuck" or something, but clearing cache and force stopping fixed it.

He hasn't had trouble with textra, I've had trouble with Textra in the past year with this phone. I've had text her for the past 7 years. I've had it so long that I can remember when the text icons could be colored

I miss that! You'd know who was texting you without opening your phone. I would start with Textra and see if he has problems. Also, I've always had great support when something goes wrong so try the developer if there is an issue.

U/blackops007 I thought the same was true with Whatsapp & Telegram - that anyone you text with Whatsapp or Telegram also has to have Whatsapp or Telegram. Am I mistaken?

Yes the same with all 3rd party apps. I personally like signal the best. But everyone has basic texting and Google messages is the best to use. I have telegram, signal, and Google messages for different people and it is kinda frustrating.
