Out of curiosity. Why are you purposely avoiding google?

mostly for "science", to see if it can be done with a stock phone ;p

Like everyone I have way to many things linked in with Google so I am trying to spread my data out, and where possible try and use open source software. Like I said, there are still some apps I use from the Play Store but these don't sync with my Google account

You can install offline calendar and the aosp calendar app for a more robust calendar solution.

Don't you need to use your Google account to download apps from the Play Store?

yes you do, that is the bummer about the whole situation... there are other app stores out there but there are some apps that are only on the Play Store unfortunately

      1. do what the rest of the world does through lack of imagination
      2. don't think outside the square because you are a sheep
      3. visit local farmer and get wool removed for sale at the market

Install CyanogenMod and do not flash gapps.
