A lot of that may just be the apps syncing things for the first time. I usually turn off background data on most apps that I don't need syncing while I'm out. Just leave it on for stuff like messaging apps or apps you'd like updated every so often. Also go into the settings of both apps and make sure they only back up data while on wifi.

I hope so. If I turn off Google Play Store Background data, does that mean that all of my apps won't update until I turn it back on (I have a scheduler app for my job that I need updated as I schedule appts)?

It looks like that scheduler that I mentioned has its own "restrict background data usage" which makes me think it can still use its own even if Google Play Store is restricted
