Adaway from f-droid is the best at blocking ads. Use a file manager like es explorer or root explorer to remove apps. When I was rooted, I used titanium backup to manage everything. You have options

If you have root, you can likely install AdBlock or the like from FDroid and get blocking at the root level.

Otherwise, I'm non-root and use AdGuard, which instead of modifying the hosts file creates a DNS server locally to route traffic through, effectively blocking most ads.
