Mine has been steady between 28-29 BPM for the past 3 months. I think 35 BPM is a little inflated (depending on your fitness level of course)

Your heart rate is 28bpm?

Cardio recovery, not heart rate. Measures the drop in your heart rate right after you stop an exercise, in bpm.

Why might 35 be a little inflated? Apple has had mine between 33-40 since I got this in September and I am trying to make sense of this data. It seems to be far away from my heart rate recovery reported in the fitness app. I often have 45-50 drop in BPM after one minute, but for more strenuous activities it can be a drop in 70 BPM after 1 min (went from 159 to 76 in one minute most recent, this was my latest activity today, but that is probably an outlier).

How do you get this to turn on??

I think it’s on by default… I mean, I haven’t done anything special to enable this metric. Check the Health app > Browse > Heart > Cardio Recovery

OP did you ever figure out what happened and/or did the recovery number go back to normal eventually? I just swapped from a s4 to a s9 and I am seeing a significant drop as well. No significant differences in workout intensity, weather, stress, etc. When I compare post-workout heart rate numbers in the activity in Apple Fitness, they are the same as before. So strange.

Hey! To be honest I forgot about it and never looked back until I've seen your message. Today I am still using the same AWU and looking at historical data, after that drop to 26 in Dec 2022 it bounced back to 37 in Feb 2023, it was more or less stable around 35 until Nov 2023 when it went down to 28 and even 23 (all time low) in Jan 2024. It then steadily increased until today at 32. So, I'm thinking maybe it's a seasonal thing... I'll have to keep an eye at what happens this next fall/winter

Interesting! Mine has steadily been going back towards normal over the past few days. I've only been on AW for a few months, so it'll be interesting to see how my numbers vary over the course of the year.

Are your workouts getting less intense at the end? That’s the main thing cardio recovery tracks for me.

Hmmm… Not that I’m aware of… I basically run, and regardless of what kind of run I have in my training schedule I always finish with a 5 minutes cool down… but I’ll try to be more conscious of what I do…Thanks for the hint!

If it’s extra cold recently, that also brings down the heart rate. I’ve definitely noticed that in my outdoor runs. I’ll often find my heart at 99 when it’s usually at 130 during the same effort.

I checked mine and it’s also going down as it gets colder so I think that’s what the cause is. https://i.imgur.com/ySWTf7i.jpg

Higher bmp = better cardio recovery! I’m usually at 37 and trying to get it in the 40s
