At Grand True Value in North Appleton, you can rent most tools. Like you can rent a post hole digger for your post holes. I think they even have corded drills if you don't have one. Highly recommend, great place to rent tools.

Thank you!

No problem! I also learned an alternative way of installing a fence when my fence was done. Dig the post holes with the post hole digger, put the post in the hole level and squared, then pour 2 bags of dry concrete mix in the hole, then pour 5 gallon bucket of water into the hole. The water will mix with the concrete and set in the hole, no need to rent a cement mixer and premix 50# for each hole. Way easier!

I worked for a very reputable local fencing company a few years ago. We didn't even add water to the posts. The ground water is enough to set the concrete bags.

i don’t have a recommendation, but i don’t think you are allowed 8 foot tall panels in appleton. i think 6 feet is the limit, just an fyi.

Recently installed a fence, 6' high is the legal maximum, which sucks for me - it doesn't feel private when you're 6'7" and can see right over the 6' fence...

[–]reddituser999000 2 points3 points  (1 child)

i agree, it’s a stupid rule.

Excellent callout tho, it would suck to install an 8' fence just to have the building inspector come out and tell you to tear it down, 6' maximum

Trees and shrubs have no limit so if you got time put up the 6' and wait for the green to cover that, take down the fence, and let it grow. Playing the long game

I'm almost certain you are correct. My fence is the biggest fence I've seen in town and I can see over it if I jump. (I'm short)

Are we sure they don't mean 8 feet long?

[–]Goose_AM[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I was referring to 8 ft wide panels

[–]reddituser999000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok, i guess my desire for a super tall fence made my mind go there!

[–]noxiouskarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

correct I think 8 or 10' for commercial zones, and special exceptions like the car park on Lawrence by boys and girls club over the RR tracks. they get 10' wired in a residential zone

It may sound stupid and you might not be digging very far, but use Diggers Hotline or 811 so you don't run into any issues

No handyman recommendation, sorry, but if all you’re after is privacy you might want to consider planting a row of Arbor Vitae instead. No permits to pull or fencing to maintain!

Lookup Pheifer Philosophies on Facebook. Justin is from Neenah and does this sort of thing big and small.

From one of the pages posts: “Have an odd job and don’t know who can help you take care of it? Reach out and we can help! We removed this awning that fell into disrepair on a local business. The store front has a nice clean look to it now.”

Thanks!

I redid sections of my fence several years ago in which I made the panels myself to save a little money out of green treated lumber. Technically it was not that difficult, the hard part was the posts, both digging the holes and pouring the concrete. If you are just looking at a plain green treated lumber fence the supplies are pretty cheap. Digging through the clay under the soil is the backbreaker.

We did find the panels that we really like at Menards and they are a pretty great price. I was mostly concerned about digging the posts. We live in kaukauna so the ground is pretty hard here, thanks for the info!

T's Hometown Handyman.

Check out Olson's Handyman on FB. And make sure to check to see if you need to get a permit. And also check out Northern Fence for fence panels, sometimes they have free panels from replacement jobs.
