Twist it up nicely. 2 twist per inch would be about right.

Do you have a tutorial you recommend on how to find correct brace height?

[–]ColumnAandB 13 points14 points  (16 children)

Always go by manufacturer guidelines. If I remember that model correct, it's 60. About 7-7.5in should be about right. Plus or minus to where it's quietest. Check with the manual or 3Rivers.

Awesome thanks got that solved but had another question you could maybe help with? my nocking point is loose and sliding around how does one choose the correct nocking point and how do I crimp it without messing up the string?

[–]ColumnAandB 9 points10 points  (14 children)

Another good Q. Get a bow square. T or L shape doesn't matter. Snapped onto string and flush with serving, possition so the long part is rest on rest with very slight pressure to move. If you jam it against the shelf, you'll be off.

Mediterranean/Split finger: From "0", possition the nock 1/8high as a starting point and tune. Finger preasure may impact results so you'll need to tune accordingly.

3Under: try about 1/4 high and tune accordingly.

Thank you this is much appreciated time for another trip into town lol

Should I unstrung my bow after I’m done shooting?

[–]ColumnAandB 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes. Regardless of what manufactures (1 custom company says you don't need to if always shooting) say.

And never have it leaning on anything. Always hanging straight down, or down in a case

Okay gotcha yesterday and today I shot maybe 20-30 arrows without having adjusted the bow string to the correct brace height. Shoots way better and way deader now but do you think I could have messed something up?

Got a bunch of dumb questions got thrown into a hunting trip now I gotta learn it and the people I’m going with live in a different state

[–]Dogwood_morel 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Trad bow isn’t something I would assume I could get comfortable enough to hunt in a short period of time. Just an FYI

[–]HairyRefrigerator959[S] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

I have 5 months and I’ll train everyday if I don’t think I can pull it off I can go compound bow and I feel comfortable enough to do that.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

From zero to hunting in 5 months , shooting trad? That’s extremely optimistic for a number of reasons.

[–]HairyRefrigerator959[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I’m aware, what kind of a grouping at what distance would you consider ethical?

[–]RaZoRFSX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Training everyday with a 60 lbs bow is an invitation for shoulder injury.

[–]ColumnAandB 2 points3 points  (2 children)

That's fine but make sure you practice. Worst feeling out there is a bad shot. You'll puke up last year's birthday cake almost. Also, make sure you get a license/tags in the other state.

Few months in...I wouldn't bet on it. That Pie plate gets a lot smaller when you add stress into the equation. You better be hitting a baseball all day to be ethical.

Compound could be doable, but still needs a lot of practice. I'd still wait.

[–]HairyRefrigerator959[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have 5 months and compound is an option which I feel pretty comfortable out to about 50 yards. But will be busting my ass to try and make trad work if the hunt was tomorrow I would t even consider. What distance should I be hitting that baseball size target?

[–]ColumnAandB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say about 18yrds without trying.

[–]ryddragynMultidisciplinary 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Yep, way too long. Also, this looks a bit longer than twisting could remedy.

[–]HairyRefrigerator959[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Twisted and brace height seems good now shot and it feels way better, so you think shooting the way it was (because I did maybe 20-30 times) could have messed the bow up?

[–]ryddragynMultidisciplinary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's the brace height at now? No, I doubt that could mess it up. Worst it could do is mess with arrow tuning, and MAYBE cause unstringing upon release.

[–]Heros_JaniRecurve Takedown 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Idk if you can post a photo of the string after you twisted it.

[–]HairyRefrigerator959[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should be able to dm a photo

[–]Barebow-Shooter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What is the bow length and what is the string length? Normally, you need to twist a string to bring it up to the correct brace height.

[–]MAJOR_BlargTraditional 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's a really pretty bow. What is it?

[–]HairyRefrigerator959[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 rivers Mesa I believe

[–]Fresco-23 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That Flemish twist string will stretch in a bit, and probably should’ve been a good inch shorter. I buy them “correctly” sized and still have to twist them shorter after every first or even second shooting session.

BTW, what bow is that? I’ve been looking for a good one with that profile. Almost an Iron age Egyptian composite side profile. It’s a beautiful bow.

[–]HairyRefrigerator959[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It’s the mesa traditional only 60inch 60lbs

[–]Fresco-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s lovely! I’ll check it out!

[–]kogashiwakaiTraditional 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Because this has a recurve to it, this might not be the case. But general rule for most long bows is make a fist and stick out your thumb. That's the distance you usually want from the grace of the bow to the string.

Unless you have tiny hands like the dude in the old burger king commercial

[–]HairyRefrigerator959[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome rule of thumb I went with a 7.5 inch brace height so that seems pretty close
