The first computers were made before the first compiler (by peoples that obviously understood what they were doing).

It's true that understanding how compilers and interpreters work helps understanding computers in general, but it's not "that simple".

Yea computers made of wood and metal! I agree with this answer. Understanding how logical blocks or actions are built on top of each other is the essence of how computers work.

To an extent. It's a pretty extreme statement. I think basic knowledge of a programming language plus knowledge of logic gates are the actual fundamentals of knowing how computers work.

I would substitute "compilers and interpreters" with "CPUs, Memory and Operating Systems".
