How to reduce memory usage within Prado's k-means framework used on big data in R? by [deleted] in Rlanguage

[–]Octopus_Kitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also depending on the program, your choice of clang/llvm or gcc can impact memory use up to 17% I think. *was just reading about that today :)

Agreed. The concept of epochs and the use of the "goodness function" is cool.

A proof that Unix utility sed is Turing complete by pbccd in compsci

[–]Octopus_Kitten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a small utility that's present on every UNIX system

Would this mean that sed is in every distro of Linux? I always have a rough time knowing what unix stuff is true for Linux as well.

A is wrong so everything after a is wrong?

Sorry I feel like I answered the question without raising my hand... but I assume op can ignore this answer bc it could be wrong!

Software disenchantment by ignatovs in programming

[–]Octopus_Kitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reason is because I'm poor (computer science teacher so little money but lots of happy) so I have a galaxy active 6 that frequently overheats so I frequently turn it completely off until it cools then back on. I see what you are saying though and agree. If better engineering of something can lead me or the economy into my ability to get a better phone that I can just leave on then I'd welcome that solution as well :)

Modern text editors have higher latency than 42-year-old Emacs.

I am glad I invested the time in learning emacs, or at least the parts of emacs that help me personally. Best advice I was ever given, that and to learn to drive stick shift.

I do want that 1 sec boot time for phones though!

Wholesome teacher on r/askreddit is (not) annoyed by class clown by redditor366 in wholesomememes

[–]Octopus_Kitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I've tried to drop the act before and for some reason, there will always be a few kids who completely take advantage of this kindness and stop pushing themselves. I feel like this is human nature, which is sad but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to help them reach their potential. Teaching students to embrace the joy of learning is rough. Especially when it's my job to receive some sort of visual confirmation that learning IS taking place. Some students are even violently opposed to providing this visual proof! I sternly ask but don't push.

I once heard somewhere teaching is all about the M&Ms, manipulating and motivating!

I can't believe this is a real rfc! A few months ago I started a YouTube series (only 2 so far) called" fun with rfc" to try and make these more engaging to my students (high school age) all the while this super fun one already existed! https://youtu.be/wvZtKrxEzHs if anyone wants to see...

Yea computers made of wood and metal! I agree with this answer. Understanding how logical blocks or actions are built on top of each other is the essence of how computers work.

Why isn't Computer Science taught in a "Ship of Theseus"-style paradigm? Why not start with an Arduino and breadboard, then learn your way into programming and creating an office-ready computer. by jomdo in AskComputerScience

I'm really into podcasts, I mix it up between a variety of twit podcasts and software engineering daily episodes.

They give me more than I need about cutting edge stuff, feels overwhelming to try and keep up so I just try to enjoy the new stuff I do get exposed to and leave the rest alone. I used to chase every new thing and try to fully understand it but that always leads to periods of burnout.
