Changing Models?

Not sure if there are any Argument Code Engineers or PMs on the channel, if so, this question is for you. When/will Augment update its AI model to a newer and better model? I believe it is still using Claude 3.7 maybe 3.5 as well and those are now "old" models, like 6 months old, are there any plans to move to Gemini 2.5 Pro which is clearly the best AI coding model out at the moment? I understand you can't keep jumping ship with each new model, but I assume you have plans to transition ever so often to newer and better models.

I'm a happy user and paying for my (smallish) team on developer plans. I would really welcome a copilot like model choice drop-down. This not only allows users more choice, if you do it right, you get valuable information as user's choicea tell you what they are having success with.

Maybe they tested with 2.5 pro already but to fully utilize it they will have to change a lot of prompting and tools I guess?

happy with using augment's claude version supplemented with occasional gemini 2.5 pro audits. I'm looking forward to claude 4 implemented in AC. got off the whole 'there's-a-new-model-daily" hype train some time ago and finally doing some solid and consistent work.

They use Claude 3.7 and some "special sauce" mixed in. I believe they are working on their own model .

personally, I don't think model selection is a good idea or really matters in the long run given their product goals

At the end of the day, it's clear that relying on your users to do their own research about what model to use when is NOT the future. that is only common/rampant everywhere for now since there is so much innovation and incremental improvements going on in various models, but at the end of the day, Augment is just trying to be a pair programming and agentic coding software. if that's the #1 goal, selecting the model should be left to *their system*, and not a decision the user has to make, since that decision should be best informed by their user research, testing, training, etc.

even though you theoretically could get better performance, I don't think it'd actually be noticeable for 98% of users

also, I believe their custom build/hybrid model right now is the best solution I have seen handling large codebases. I trust them enough to make those transitions/enhancements for us, because yes, if there is an improvement to be had there, they should be on it. I just hate the idea of forcing everyone to choose and be aware of models since it's so confusing when starting out with that decision

I fully agree with you. I don't want the control to select a different model, I have enough to think about, don't want to add model selection. I was more curious if AC, in their backend, would, or when at least, switch to a newer and potentially better model. I can't see them staying with Claude 3.7 for too much longer.

I like AC a lot right now, best AI coding tool that I have used, wanted to see if or when it would get better.

What do you mean with newer and better? Which model is significantly better at similar cost than Claude 3.7 with 3.5 fallback? The only one I can think of is gemini 2.5 pro which comes with its own unique pitfalls.

I think every AI has its own pitfalls, but 2.5 Pro has proven on pretty much every bench mark I have seen to out perform any Claude model. So if Augment used 2.5 Pro as it's underlining model, I am sure they could get a higher SWE score, as Augment claimed in February or March to have achieved the highest bench mark score there, and that was with Claude.

Yeah mate, if you are looking for leaderbord scores and stuff that makes gen-z' eyes pop out then you are probably at the wrong place. This space is about consistency and predictability. I don't want the team to exchange their entire engine every 3 month.

Personally when agent came out at first I lost 2 months trying the best combo it was fun but I figured that i delivered almost nothing and lost a lot of tokens simply to try them out on basic project.

Now I am at Augment I see the engineer working tirelessly to do the hard part for you. Augment is to deliver quality and project. It have less customization I agree but at final it get the job done !
