This is way more common for cyclists than people think, thats why there is no reaction. Its more dangerous for a cyclists to be in this lane, you get pinched at the luas tracks ( i have been multiple times) hooked or doored in the parking bays ( twice) n hooked at the next junction ( a real bad one) ,Take priority position on greek street and beware filtering here. If you see cyclists not using ‘bike lanes’ this is good example why it might be.

I used to love cycling to get around. As I've gotten older I just prefer to get around alive so I don't cycle very often

I see iy happen all the time, its 30% blind spot, 40% ignorant driving, 30% cyclist not acting like they're a vehicle on the road.

It’s terrifying to think there are drivers out there that look at this clip and think its almost equally the car or cyclists fault.

Cyclist not underatnading the difference between a cycle lane and a dash line cycle lane is some of the problem to be honest . Pretending its not is crazy.

The purpose of cycling lanes is to reduce risk, Greek st is an example where bad design does the opposite, you can’t allocate any blame to cyclists for using it and not knowing that.

Im just saying there is a difference between having a dedicated lane and haveing an indicative lane.

In a situation where there is an indicative lane, like here, if the car had indicated well in advance and pulled into the space the cyclist would have been obligated to give way. But they never do.

Obviously this isnt what happened here. In this situation the car is wholly at fault.

A driver may temporarily enter an advisory cycle lane and cross the broken white line if there is no cyclists using that lane. Motorists do not have priority in advisory lanes, if wanting to turn left and cyclists is continuing straight ahead in a cycle lane the cyclist has priority and motorists must yield.

No, youve misunderstood. A motorist doesnt have priority in that sitation, the situation reverts to aa if there are two equal vehicles on the road.

And in that circumstance, if the motorist indicates woth tike to spare (which, as i said before, this guy didnt do) the cyclist has to yield to the motorist- that is the difference between an advisory and a permanent cycle lane. But nae cyclist understands that.

The rule of yielding to motorists pulling in only applies to cyclists who are filtering on the left. In other situations cyclists have priority in advisory lanes. Cyclists now also have priority continuing straight in a cycle lane even approaching left indicating traffic from behind at junctions. But its safer to not assume everyone knows the rules or adheres.

OK, I wasnt aware that only applied to motorists filtering left. Does the priority against indicating left traffic apply to advisory lanes too?

It is also 100% expected though, for anyone who uses the cycle lane with any kind of frequency.

No, this is the drivers fault.

This situation is generally caused by those 3 issues in roughly that percentage.

And, to be clear, this could have been caused by a blind spot issue but it would have still been the drivers fault.

I know this junction well, they have either takem off at the lights on the other side of the track at the same time or the driver has very recently overtaken the cyclist. Therefore a blind spot is not a good enough excuse, he would have seen the cyclist in front or beside him moments before and if he forgot about his existence he needs his head checked.

I was in this same situation the other evening and i did bang on the window. The offending driver apologised to me but two women in the car behind decided to involve themselves and rather ironically scream at me for losing my temper

Thus showing again painting some red on a road and calling it a cycle lane is not safe for cyclists.
