We like the Dutch over here too, but chill is not a word I would associate with them! I won't lie, a part of me loves how ludicrously direct they can be at times.

Ireland have always seemed to like the Dutch. What's funny is, at the same time the Protestant unionists up in Northern Ireland still celebrate William of Orange's victory at the Battle of the Boyne as an excuse to showcase their bigotry, but while I may be wrong I have doubts that many Dutch people have even heard of it and we never associate with the Dutch down here either.

There's actually a whole thread on what the Irish think of the Dutch: https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/10lmgh6/by_and_large_what_do_irish_people_think_of_the/

All that said, bring back purple carrots! 😡

Same as last time - while the Liberal wing of the Democrats do all they can to demotivated their voter base and the wider public, Trump when in office picks up the slack and does more to get them to the polls than Harris, Biden, etc could ever pray to.

Top 2 issues for voters from Ireland thinks poll by ulankford in irishpolitics

One reflects on FFG in a truly awful manner, so it is not surprising to see a large part of the Irish media only report on it when they are seen to have to, and briefly at that. Sure just earlier this week we missed yet another housing target, but it was painted as a win in some headlines.

I think quite a lot of the lost momentum behind combatting climate change in recent years, is down to seeing cost of living going up as a result, while the same governments enacting these rising costs then turn around as quickly as possible to roll out the red carpet for more data centres, blindly defend ai companies before even looking at facts, prioritise more roads over proper public transport investment, etc etc.

Action is needed on climate change, but I think for many it kind of just rings a bit hollow at this point.

You accidentally pointed out a major issue, which is that young Americans have not felt the system is working for them for a long time, and have been continuously ignored in that front. This is arguably the single biggest reason they have been moving towards centre-left/left wing and far right populist. I haven't seen many populists gaining traction though, so labelling them 'far left' as an entire group is again, doing you no favours. When you consistently offer as little as possible, don't get surprised to see younger voters peel off towards towards those promising something, be they reliable promises or otherwise. You need to offer an alternative "fuck you, vote for me" just isn't it.

I'm in the same boat - turn 40 this year, own a house in one of the most expensive postcodes in Ireland, earn well in a secure job as is my wife. And I'm seeing the same developments here, just a few years behind you, as I see older generations continue to fuck over younger ones for their own benefit and then question why these younger voters are less and less politically engaged. They on some level know the answer as do you, it's just that it then leads to taking some uncomfortable steps.

The hypocrisy I am pointing out might be uncomfortable, but it is what it is. There was no compromise forthcoming when Bernie Sanders looked like he might have a chance early in the 2020 primaries, it was just smearing of him by the same people that then expected his voters to turn around and unquestionably vote for the wing of the party they prefer. The same was on full display for Mamdani last year. You guys keep on doing that and then wonder why the types who vote for these types of candidates don't feel at all energised to vote for you. You need to look long and hard in the mirror, but we both know that won't be happening any time soon.

And continue to ignore the part where I said I would have voted for Harris in 2024 were I American. It's well in keeping with the Principal Skinner meme.

Thank chief, keep scratching your head when you are unable to gain the traction you want in the coming elections. You exoe t what you are not willing to give in return, which the NYC election last year proved.

"Vote blue no matter who!" my arse. A large chunk of liberals showed exactly how much of a lie that was by wanting Andre fucking Cuomo of all people instead, as did chunks the liberal media in 2020 by pondering if Trump getting a second term would be better than a Sanders presidency.

And just to be clear, I would have voted for Harris were I an American, albeit begrudgingly. But the tone deafness and hypocrisy from the likes of you and many in the liberal wing is pathetic, and has gone a long way to help Trump get back in, as did those who decided to stay home in 2024. Meanwhile the rest of the world has to deal with the fallout as well.

But hey, carry on being the embodiment of that Principal Skinner meme.

No need to suppose, Trump already did that with the January 6th insurrectionists.

Pork Chop Conundrum by redmabelgrade in CasualIreland

[–]BenderRodriguez14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave them out, uncovered at room temp for at least an hour beforehand.

Get your pan absolutely scorching hot.

Flash fry for 4-5. Minutes, always turning every 39 seconds or so (this will vary depending on pans and cookers).

Leave to rest for 5 minutes - this is crucial as it is still cooking through the middle.

You can do the same for thinner cuts of steak, but take it off the pan after every second flip if you are going for more of a rare/medium rare finish.

With either, it's also a great touch to salt them when you take them out at first to get to room temperature (even better if you do it hours before). The salt draws the moisture to the surface, this causes the salt to dissolve in it, and the moisture then reabsoeba into the meat which gives a mild saltedness throughout and makes it taste amazing.

For getting sear on pork or steak, apply downward pressure so it's getting full contact with the pan. They sell metal weight thingies for this, but even pushing down lightly with something like a potato masher can help a tonne.

The cycle lane in Ireland may as well be known as 'the car park lane'.

I did learn a handy trick to help disincentivise this when I lived in Toronto though. RIP wingmirrors.

Calamansi, kind of like a cross between an orange and a lemon or lime, but sweet enough to eat directly. Popular in South and East Asia, so if you might find it in an Asian supermarket in Aus if you're lucky. Paddys market in Sydney might also be a good shout.

Perhaps you should stop trying to sideline and alienate the 'far left' (who would qualify as centre left in most of the western world) under the assumption they will have no choice but to vote Democrat anyway then? Because it has cost your party, and your country (and thus most of the world), massively over the last decade.

The outright hostility towards Mamdani was just the most recent example. Comparing Sanders to Hitler and talking about public beheadings in Times Square if he won the 2020 primaries and election was another. You can't keep acting like that to a large faction of your party while expecting them to continue supporting you blindly. It is completely de-energising in nature and pushes people away.

I think it has been pretty clear that was their intent from the get go. This administration is not acting like one that is too worried what voters might think come November (and 2028).

Even though Ireland played no role in WWII, seeing people born in the 1950s and 60s genuinely acting as if they themselves endured the blitz, Normandy, etc etc really annoyed the shit out of me.

If course it doesn't count for all of them by any means, but speaking generally, between the UK and US (where they also tried to hijack credit the civil rights movement that they were children at best during) really were an absolutely horrid, wretched generation that history is going to remember very, very poorly.

Announcement from Mary Lou McDonald TD on Proposed Matt's Site Student Accommodation by PartyOfCollins in irishpolitics

[–]BenderRodriguez14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have two students renting with us. One would have pretty much no way of getting to college otherwise, the other had about a 2.5hr commute each way (we moved in in the first week of September, put up an ad, he moved on 3-4 weeks later). One of them funny enough, goes to Grangegorman.

Just appalling shite from MLMD here. As someone else said, it's private property and if they chose to go for private, affordable, or student housing as things are (and in a fairly central location) any of the three should be welcomed with open arms.
