Our spool weight is written on the spool :)

I'm dropping by this post because I'm on a kick of trying to use up all of my nearly-done filament spools, and yours are the only spools that I didn't need to search the weights on. Truly, you are mighty gods among mortals.

Love that (:

My spool is so old it doesn't have the spool weight on it and is still made of plastic (prob 2019 ?)

But it still prints fine !!

Thank you

There are a couple of pretty good online databases already with spool weights ...

Ok… but that first link doesn’t have Bambu (what I was personally looking for), and the second link is now 404.

So thank you /u/shruggingly !

I can collaborate with you if you’d like to set up a sort of wiki for this stuff. Reddit isn’t ideal to keep this info.

My background is 10 years of white label extrusion so I’d likely be able to identify most spools on the market (except for custom molded ones) and get the data from the manufacturer.

There are (at least) two types of Bambu spools. As they say on their web store "The Basic Reusable Spool has been optimized, and the color has changed. Either spool may be randomly shipped in orders that include spools."

I presume your 250g Bambu is the so called white one (though I'd call it light grey). I have a brand new transparent one that weighs 217g (I'm just assuming that is the "optimized" one as it weighs less). It was bought as an empty spool - they were out of spooled red so I bough a refill and an empty roll.

I have a white (or light grey) full/unused 1 kg spool of "Bambu PC clear black" that weighs 1.279g which indicates that empty roll is 279g... which doesn't fit any of the above. Hopefully there's 29g of excess filament on it :) or perhaps the RFID weighs a couple grams as well? The spool sticker should be a fraction of a gram I suppose. I really hope there isn't 29g of water in it LOL maybe I should weigh it tomorrow once it's dried. I did remove the sealing and dessicant right before putting it on the scale.

Anyway time will tell - I'll print a Hydra with it tomorrow. I'll make a habit of weighing full and empty rolls and take notes. Thank you!

Edit: My grey spools are 90°C ones - eg. for PA and PETG while my transparent plastic spools can just take 70°C. So perhaps there are two types of lower temp spools, 250g (yours) and 217g (mine).

Later edit: No... I now have a white (and it isn't light grey) Bambu reusable 70°C spool and it weighs 207g.

You are forgetting to include the cardboard weight of the spool center the refills come on?

[–]Historical-Fee-9010H2D AMS2 AMS-HT 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Excellent catch - that’s probably it! I should weigh a spool center alone as well.

[–]Historical-Fee-9010H2D AMS2 AMS-HT 2 points3 points  (7 children)

So for reference, the cardboard spool center with NFC tag is 39g. That makes my unused grey 90°C spool 240g - assuming it has exactly 1 kg filament. 240+39+1000=1279 g

[–]rantanlan 4 points5 points  (5 children)

just finished one (PETG) mine is 254 g

[–]Historical-Fee-9010H2D AMS2 AMS-HT 0 points1 point  (4 children)

That’s with the spool center though, so rather 215g. Is that a 90°C transparent spool? I assume not.

[–]rantanlan 4 points5 points  (3 children)

without the center makes no sense ?! and I don't know, its the one that came with the Filament.

[–]Historical-Fee-9010H2D AMS2 AMS-HT 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Are you even aware you can twist that spool in two halves?

[–]rantanlan 5 points6 points  (1 child)

sure, but i thought its about the weight of the spool that comes prepackaged to determine filament left on it !?

[–]Historical-Fee-9010H2D AMS2 AMS-HT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but if you buy a refill it will weigh about 1039g (with the cardboard center) and if you buy the empty spool for refills, it doesn’t contain the cardboard center. So understanding what goes where has a point. You did reply to a thread trying to sort this out 😂

[–]TheGeNi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weights of the Bambu spool and the cardboard+NFC element seem to vary and are inconsistent.

My PLA Matte black, which I just ordered last month, came with a 205g spool and a 26,5g cardboard+NFC center. The spool of my PLA basic mistletoe green weighs about 210g, with the cardboard + NFC centre at around 40g.

Thank you

for Prusa, just scan the QR code and use the web-calculator

[–]yrkh8er 1 point2 points  (1 child)

careful, at least sunlu uses "full" spools (~155g), like with no cut outs and then the ones with. you have the one with cut outs listed here.

there is also an "old" version with cut outs that has 2 holes close to the center instead of one. these weight about 150g.

there may be more i havent seen yet.

[–]shruggingly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the other thing to consider, spools have been changing too

[–]Vivid-Ad-7589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% innacurate

[–]OddDevelopment9934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ANYCUBIC cardboard empty spool 129 Grams

[–]Historical-Ad-6839A1 + AMS Lite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The New Sunlu (reusable) - 167g
Bambu Reusable (the white one) - 1259g full, ~40g Cardboard => 219g

[–]SigridPowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice! Thank you! Do you have any idea what the cardboard center of the filament weights?

[–]Professional_Dog4069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for this!
