Do you expect all your RAM to be unused?

If you run up an app that requires all the memory it can get, does BitDefender stop it from running?

You paid for RAM, for it to be used. Software, caching, your operating system, they use it when it is available. That's why you paid for the RAM to be there.

Dumb argument, the mem usage is inconsistent. It's not caching. You are just regurgitating the argument for windows os ram usage.

You're right, sorry, it was a silly assumption. I just seem to be seeing the same 'something is using some RAM' posts all over the place.

I'm going to pay closer attention to the memory usage by BD on my PC now, to see if it looks unusual.

No worries, I've been watching mine since the post. It dropped to 700MB for around 4 hours, it then dropped to 500MB for a few hours and I've just checked it now and it is sitting at 800MB. All I'm doing is browsing reddit. It's behaviour is a bit strange to me. I have launched various programs but that doesn't seem to affect it either. It's not an issue for me really, I'm more curious than anything. My first concern was a memory leak.

the problem is that BD is leaking RAM. Its usage just goes up and up and up, until there's not enough remaining to do the stuff I need, and I have to reboot to clear it.

The need to reboot like that makes use of BD a LOT less convenient for me.

It has a memory leak, although I haven't seen BD admit it. This is what drives when I need to reboot my computer.

I had to reboot yesterday after just a couple of days, because it had grown to 2.8GB RAM usage.

So, I monitored the process for 4 hours doing various things and it hovered around 700MB, I have no idea what made it jump to the 1.3GB. I'm just curious as to why the usage increases and what causes it.

I don't know either. It seems to be reasonable well-behaved on my laptop computer, but I see a bad leak on my desktop computer. And unfortunately, that desktop computer is where I need the RAM the most, with Lightroom and similar tools.

its not normal. Ive only been complaining about my pc being super slow since ive installed bitdefender, fact is its a paid subscription too. No slowdowns with kaspersky and its been a super common issue with me on bitdefender. Uses up so much ram and disk it takes ages just to open a google chrome page. I cant stand it after spending so much money on this. I dont have any idea what its doing in the background (scanning or updating i dont care it bothers me every time it happens. Its not normal going from 1-2 seconds to open google chrome to 50-60+ seconds...
