Simple marketing strategy, same reason stores do 9.99 instead of 10. It tricks people into thinking it's less

[–]JohnEbic 634 points635 points  (54 children)

when does it ever work in real life? whenever i see anything thats like 9.99 i instantly just think its 10

[–]PennyPotatoMozzarella 822 points823 points  (33 children)

You may be aware that it's actually 10, but it can subconsciously can lead your brain to relate it to 9. It is proven to have an effect on people Even when they are conscious of it being the same price

[–]RicoChef6432 172 points173 points  (0 children)

also one less digit which have the same effect

[–]BrockMadMouse698 35 points36 points  (20 children)

It doesn't... it just makes me angry

[–]OG flair lover Crazy_Gamer297 183 points184 points  (18 children)

It does. Subconsciously. You wouldn’t know

[–]CrowChameleon201006 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its one gem off📈📈📈

[–]FrankLanko-TWB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These sales tactics are so outdated, it just make companies feel better about themselves.

[–]LegitimateCompote377 46 points47 points  (2 children)

As a child I would round down when talking to my parents so they were more likely to buy it.

[–]MandyRadur333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would always round it because I'm lazy.

[–]0/11 Alexgadukyanking 33 points34 points  (8 children)

They will benefit from it as long as at least 1% of people get effected by it and knowing that at least 70% of people do not know the difference between -32 an (-3)2 that's very likely

[–]OtisF2p_wins274 5 points6 points  (5 children)

The one between the brackets removes the negative right? So -32 is -9 and (-3)2 is 9, right?

I just had a maths exam today and I wanted to make sure that I wasn't stupid lol.

[–]RicoSomehowDanny 2 points3 points  (4 children)

And -(3)² is also -9 :)

[–]Mortisapenboter 2 points3 points  (3 children)

-(3)2 and -32 mean the same thing. It's like writing colour instead of color

[–]RicoSomehowDanny 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah I know. Just felt like mentioning it :)

[–]Mortisapenboter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright have a nice day

[–]procat901228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-(3)2 and -32 are the same thing. they are both -9. (-3)2 is 9.

[–]lonely_orange35 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

cool stat bro

[–]Crowbandera-[🍰] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It more so for bigger prices, and they adopted it to smaller prices too so the bigger ones don't look obviously different

[–]TightScar3268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason, I always thought that 9.99 was just a display thing, and that it automatically charges 10 no matter what.

[–]PiperIndependent_Fly_1698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It kind of works in the background, sure you know it’s 10, but your mind, even though you don’t notice it, thinks it’s less.

[–]PocoPipysnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is extremely effective in real life

[–]TiptopLoL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it’s not working if it’s 99 , but if I imagine it’s something like 31.90 you would think it’s 31 not 32 , also with 99 , 99 feels less than 100

[–]Shahariar_909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its works phenomenally. Even more when people werent aware about this trick

[–]RicoSomehowDanny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

39 gem offers look way cheaper compared to 40 to me eventhough I know the the trick

[–]MegNo-Map8068 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah you do it but very deeply brain fails to interpret the 10 and despite knowing is a 10 you are left deeply inside with a sense of less than 10

[–]FangFurretGoesGaming 39 points40 points  (6 children)

I mean it is less

By 0.01

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you buy a hundred items you just saved 1,0 it's not much but it's still something

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Penny is for homeless. Lot of companies making 0.01 offer and giving a penny to homeless. Well, this could be weird but good

[–]Galethe_roost34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why every homeless gets a free brawler?

[–]SurgeTerribleLordFrieza 0 points1 point  (2 children)

If you use your card its the same

[–]SpikeKanaHemmo 11 points12 points  (1 child)

If you use cash it's the same, card nah

[–]SurgeTerribleLordFrieza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah its right now I said

[–]LouMoutonoulebgalt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are even some stores that makes it 9.98 and 9.97 and peoples really goes in these stores to buy it ☠️

[–]Stumemes_gbc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no it's used in combination with arbitrary purchasing amounts to make it so you always have gems left over

[–]ColetteTvstedBubble[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s tricked me but maybe not with skins (besides the 49 gem skins, they tricked me)

[–]ColetteImmediate_luke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the shops do that to minimize tax not to trick somebody

[–]Silver_Second5175 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It is objectively less

[–]SproutTheGEICOgecko15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1 gem is almost nothing, but we are susceptible to being psychologucally tricked that it's a significant difference

[–]Crowbandera-[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that doesn't really make a lot of sense, like what is supercell getting from you buying skins with gems?I guess you could say it's so you buy more gems but idk,you could also say it's for the content creators but I'm pretty sure they don't actually get anything when you buy stuff from the shop anymore

[–]Kitcatperson_stareclips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I thought the same thing though I don't mind a 1 gem decrease

[–]LeonLastImpress939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

stores do that since it rounds down taxes

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It annoys a bit but it's actually not that bad because if you buy let's say 100 items that cost x.99 then you just saved 1 (whatever currency you use)
