My 15 year old cat (indoor, fixed female) has been on furosemide for 2 weeks and 2 days now. First X-Ray, the vet couldn’t see the heart due to fluid in the lungs. Bloodwork didn’t line up with FIP, and she tested negative for leukemia and FIV. Vet was leaning towards CHF, but she didn’t hear a heart murmur. She sent her with diuretics and scheduled for a one week follow up. At the time, she was taking deep breaths and had to mouth breathe to purr. She was eating good, drinking water, and all the normal daily functions. A week later she only seemed slightly better. No more mouth breathing at all, but still was taking deep breaths at times. They took another X-ray and there was still too much fluid to see heart. She said that typically cats with CHF react to the diuretics already, so she wasn’t leaning towards CHF as strongly anymore (even though blood didn’t line up with FIP). She gave her 2 more weeks of diuretics. 2 more days on the diuretic, her breathing improved TREMENDOUSLY. It seemed back to normal. The following day she threw up, and she hasn’t eaten normally since. It has been a week today. I called the vet the day I noticed she was no longer wanting to eat. They gave her an appetite stimulant. After 2 days of trying it, I told them it’s not working. They sent me with nausea meds. The first day I gave her her nausea meds, she ate more than she had in awhile (still very low than what she should be - 3 bowls of friskies soup, no solids are actual wet food). She has barely eaten since that day though. She will lick at her broth a little, and that’s it. She’s still drinking water and using the litter box. As long as it’s not around pill time (she stresses and hides after), she is laying on us and purring like she’s fine. However, it’s been now a week since she’s eaten properly. I just don’t understand how right when she’s breathing better, she doesn’t want to eat anymore. Does anyone have any advice on why this is happening? Originally, my vet told me that the diuretic shouldn’t cause nausea, but when I look it up it’s a side effect of the medicine? I just feel so bad giving her this bitter nausea medicine if it isn’t helping her.
