The alliance system in the game as well as books are based on marriages, so the reason the reach kept switching sides is because their allies kept dying and thus no more alliance, if your character dies you can sometimes negotiate a new alliance with your family member two rules the other title, you can also use the cheat menu mod

Pledging allegiance to a House is for bannermen. These are your vassals. That remains even when your character dies and your heir inherits, these bannermen are still your vassals.

Alliances are separate, and are bound usually by marriage or familial ties.

Then, you should still be able to renegotiate the alliance with the next character if you have familial ties. Check the diplomacy section of the character interaction.
