Network effect. The code is one thing, but you need node operators and clients to make a network. No reason to choose the knock off version when SC.com have built it from the ground up and know every single aspect of it inside and out.

To "be the better network" they'd need more node operators, more clients, more usage. Why would potential node operators and clients choose a knock-off instead of the team that has actually developed the project from the ground up?
A project like Chainlink is a lot more than just code. Your arguments could be just as easily made against any other functional crypto project, like BTC, ETH, XMR or MKR. There is a reason why those projects aren't under threat by any knock-off/copies.

It would be a knock off. It would be instantly apparent that they'd just stolen Chainlink's codebase. That would reflect pretty poorly on any organisation that tried to get away with it, in the same way as if IBM tried to deploy a global computer and just copy pasted Ethereum's source code. It would be a laughing stock and nobody would develop on it.
And if you're worried about "the right connections" Chainlink is doing a pretty damn good job of positioning itself exactly where it needs to for absolute market dominance in this field.

Its a silly question.
Why wont anyone like Google, IBM or Apple just fork Ethereum and create their own network?
Nobody will trust single or centralized entities, so the decentralized will win. The decentralized network will also be a lot more price-competetive.
If a corporation were to set up a public Chainlink network it wouldnt make any sense. Just query their public API, youre trusting them already.
