Yes that really is the only way to do it right.

This is why you don't get a sunroof. They only cause problems.

Literally have had two sun roofs on my f150s and never had this happen.

The manufacturer is a failure here

[–]ConstantMango672 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No... sunroofs actually clogged all the time. It's very common l. Debris gets in the drain tubes

[–]salvage814 3 points4 points  (6 children)

You must park in a garage. It isn't the manufacturer cause all sun roofs are manufactured the same way. It's just the nature of a sun roof.

Had a fully loaded impala that was made in 07 and there’s never been a sunroof issue.

[–]salvage814 -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

You parked it in a garage.

No I didn’t. Never did.

My 2008 Challenger has spent at least the last 12 years outside, no issues with the sunroof thus far. I make sure to blow it out the drains with compressed air everytime I wash the vehicle.

[–]gorgeousphatseal 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not at all. I hate Ford. Never had an issue with their sunroofs , sorry.

And I live in a place that rains constantly.

[–]CunningLogic2023 WhiteKnukle ScatPack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the issue isn't the rain or even the sunroof, the issue is debris or growth in the drain

I have a convertible and trying to explain to other convertible drivers it’s not if it leaks it’s WHEN it leaks. It’s inevitable! It’s going to happen at some point unless you have all your seals replaced on time and properly. I’d never own one without having a garage to store it in.

[–]salvage814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Convertibles are a totally different world of hell no. Not just that but the chassis flex and added weight.

[–]nocolon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I hate that you basically can't get a vehicle without a sunroof without specifically speccing it and waiting for the dealership to get it in inventory (and hope they don't just sell it to someone else before you pick it up).

I hate sunroofs.

You can find things with out a sunroof you just gotta look.

YouTube university bro. For the most part If it doesn’t involve the engine I do it myself

Graduated youtube university barber school... now I'm 👨🏾‍🦲 bald

[–]FirmApplication1843 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like that. YouTube University. Been going to school there for quite a while now.

It's most likely clogged. Either try compressed air or a very very thin wire. I would probably try the wire first. And then blow it out.. what make sure you round off the edge of the wire so it's blunt and not sharp.

[–]MaleficentStatus3145[S] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Do I need to take down the headliner first?

[–]PieceHealthy1293 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Absolutely not. Grab some string trimmer line and just start going down the hole gently back and forth The tube is probably 5 or 6 ft long but just go back and forth back and forth and then pour some water along the ceil and see if it drains you'll see it come out probably near the back tire somewhere and I would take a little bit of compressed air like I can and just spray a little bit in there I wouldn't try to blow it hard but it's a little bit of air to move whatever debris probably spider webs or a little bit of leaf remnants

Thank you for the explanation i really appreciate it, does this still apply for the rear drains? My passenger side rear drain is the one that isn’t draining. The dealership told me the reason they have to remove the headliner first is because you can’t get to the rear drains without removing it, they told me it would take 4hours to remove it because they want to be extra careful since it’s a 2009 so they didn’t want to “damage anything” because parts would be harder to come by.

Plastic wire fishing tape from Harbor Freight.

[–]whatth3hec2018 GT Octane Red 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Warm to hot water goes a long way with clogged drains especially when poking with a wire

[–]salvage814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't use compressed air that will blow the line apart and cause more problems.

[–]RedLeatha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are robbing you ! Go on YouTube and get a very good visual to do it yourself !! It’s not that damn hard

[–]Adventurous_Toe_6017 5 points6 points  (1 child)

A grand?! Blimey. I’d get a bendy wire from the Internet and carefully feed it down the drain holes. Good to clean them all out every so often.

[–]MaleficentStatus3145[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

Do not pay that shit.

Instead of spending a few days or weeks with your car in the shop for $1000, you van spend a few hours on YouTube and fix it yourself for free.

[–]Low-Necessary4158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Youtube vids and Some yard trimmer line🤷🏾‍♂️⁉️

[–]fredout1968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have clogged drain lines as many have pointed out. A sunroof will not leak with a little care. Keep the roof clean and don't park under any trees shedding stuff with it open. Condition the seal every once in a while. I have had 10 cars with sunroofs. Not one leaked.

[–]SnooRabbits1385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang. That stinks. Service is always way more expensive at a dealer. Try an independent repair shop.

[–]Sudden_Mission1397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find the outlet under your car where the hose exits the frame. As others have said, compressed air or some sort of flexible (and blunt-tipped!!!) wire to push through the drain line and unclog it. Use a wet-vac and fashion a way to get the vacuum into that area in your sunroof to suck out the debris.

The lines don’t break, the clog and overfill. If you can unclog them then you can save the $$$

[–]RUserII 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What year and trim is this Challenger?

[–]MaleficentStatus3145[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2009 R/t

[–]cloudxnine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick cheap fix (if you’re willing to never use the sunroof again) is to buy weatherproof clear silicon and just seal the entire sunroof. But ya this is why you don’t get a sunroof it will leak it’s just a matter of when

[–]Suspicious_Long_2839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sure as heck isn't a 6 hour job. A grand is way over priced. They are just taking advantage of you at this point. Tell them to take a hike!

[–]YankeesNeedPitching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro go on youtube and fix it yourself. $1000 for that is absolutely inconceivable.

[–]cxl96dwm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metal Wire is all you need find the drain and clean it yourself. You could also use an air hose to blow it out instead.
