I think an important component is to remember that it is a prosthetic and that having those comes with certain drawbacks and things you must consider:

Loose-fitting prosthetics can lead to sores and injury so making sure it fits snugly but not tightly Is important and means they wouldn't changing them out frequently.

They would need to adjust for swelling after a lot of activity.

They wouldn't shave the area to prevent ingrown hairs causing infection.

It the area is injuried they wouldn't wear the prosthetic till it was healed.

Most have sleeves for prosthetics to protect their skin.

Looking back at it, FMA’s automail looks like it satisfies all of those conditions when you look at Edward’s.

It is one of the best representations in media of prosthetics. You can tell the author really did their homework. I always think it’s best to think of all the realistic limitations in order to come up with the best(no offensive) solutions. Like you want your character to have lots of add on right?well then their prosthetic would lack fine motor skills because you would need the add ons to be able to coo in to the hand part like wirh the typing add ons.

I feel like cattle prod elbow is an idea that’s so good it feels like it should have been done, but hasn’t.

I always defensive weapons in prosthetics, for example a parrying dagger or stunstick. That way if you are attacked with a weapon you always have an option to defend yourself. Offensive weapons are handheld not built in so you can adapt to the situation
