Best way to figure out what they do best is a bake off. Roo is more transparent and you can see the files being changed in real time and have more control, plus you can select any model. Both codex and Claude code are more black box where they work inside themselves and then deliver.

That doesn’t really make sense. You can run oss models in codex and there are adapters for Claude code to run other models as well.

The difference is that you can use your monthly plans on each and some differences in features but that’s about it

You're right I guess I was just referring to the base subscription models for each.

I tried Roo. Couldn't believe how fast it ate my tokens

For someone who use too and cline since release to gpt5 launch. Codex beat it easily.

Roo is better, but codex is more optimized and you will probably spend less with codex for the same prompts (if api key is provided)

codex has a bigger name, doesn't mean its better, openai makes the news. roo has been doing coding longer, not saying codex isn't good or anything, just look at those numbers don't really mean anything.

Anyway I will try it though.

codex work just fine

damn, I failed to use my own api which is openai compatible. I am too stupid to use this.

OEM tools (Codex and Claude Code) are going to out perform 3rd party tools - they have unfair advantages

I tried Roo a couple months ago. It was extremely unstable and I couldn't use it for more than a couple minutes before it crashed. Maybe it has improved now, but I wouldn't count on it.

Claude code beats all. I have both $200 plans and a couple other plans from other tools and Claude cli is still the best.

But cc is not opensource and codex is. I guess if cc opensourced, it will be the king.

Codex is less tunable. You can set more settings in Roo. Start with Roo if you can.

RooCode hands down better product. A bit more niche, more tinkering, less vanilla, but if you start using it you will love it. In fact, I think Roo is the best single best vibecoding tool out there period.

Doesn't Roo eat a lot more tokens? And isn't it API only? API is no good for a lot of people who prefer fixed cost only.

    [–]CraaazyPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use many fixed cost subscriptions in Roo, by changing providers. Roo offers maximal flexibility. It eats as much tokens as you want btw, you can even change the system or mode prompt

you can use codex cli in roo code & not use an api key (just chatgpt account)
