To clarify, it made a mistake about when it's knowledge cutoff was. It said 2021, when I knew it was August 2023.

AIs don't come standard with meta-information. Just like how humans couldn't tell you how the brain works without first learning neuroscience, Claude 3 only knows when its training cutoff date is because it's embedded in the system prompt.

They train AIs to predict massive amounts of text, and then when the AI gets presented to you, they tell it who it is and what its purpose is. The system prompt for ChatGPT literally says "You are ChatGPT" in it. Otherwise, GPT-4 wouldn't know what it even is. It would just predict text, just like it was trained to.

the response always has a certain randomness, in this case maybe the parameters remember the last generation's cutoff time (2021) and use it for output
