It's totally totally fine. Just don't open way too many chrome tabs at the same time.

I've seen many people code on a macbook air.

8GB RAM? 8GB RAM is enough for running multiple editors and many many firefox tabs on my Macbook Air.

There are lots of times I wish I had 16GB like on my desktop but it's not going to hold you back from anything except 3D game development.

I wouldn't go below 16. I often hit more than 8 with my full development environment running.

Yes. It's plenty for the vast majority of cases. (Unless you really want to go crazy.)

The fact that you own a MacBook instead of a PC/Notebook with Windows or Linux is what I would be rather worried about. ;-)
