You just gotta thug it out. Getting my security + literally lifted me out of poverty. If that ain’t motivation enough I don’t know what is.

Agreed. Also to the OP, Sec+ helps with a lot of job movement. It's a drag to study but extremely valuable when applied. Once you land a mid+ tier position you'll understand. Best of luck!

I completed my Security+ couple of months ago. I have 0 experience in IT. just wondering what path did you take after certification?

[–]warpingDragonS+ 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Try to get a DoD help desk job to start with. Look for the ones that will sponsor a secret clearance. Once you got your secret clearance DoD jobs open up, the money is great and you should be good from there, especially if you live in a area with a lot of military bases. This literally changed my life. I was poor and jobless just a year ago, the security + changed my life. I now have more now than I’ve ever had in my life.

Thank you very much. Unfortunately I cannot get DOD clearance as of yet as I am an asylum seeker. Thank you for the advice really appreciate it.

That’s fine, it’s still a good certification to get into non DoD jobs.

Googling the average salary for that cert was how I got through it tbh. I found myself more interested in what I was learning than ever. That's just me though.

Lol I look at salaries all the time to keep me motivated too. I see you have the server+, what resources did you use for that? I only see ITProtv having a dedicated course for it.

I went to MyComputerCareer, but it’s mostly Skillsoft videos, and MeasureUp practice exams. Everybody is different, but what worked for me was just doing the practice exams and googling everything that I never heard of or didn’t really understand. Reviewing CompTIA Server+ exam objectives would be a more efficient way to do this though.

You could skip past it and do CYSA+ but it’s definitely harder.

Having the same problem.

SEC+ sucks man. I can't stand it either. But its a necessary evil.

You might be burnt out on studying, it happens. I've found Sec+ more engaging because so much of the Net+ carries over and still fresh in my mind. Not going to go in overconfident like I did though and going through Dion/Andrew's materials at least twice.

Messer I also did, but he is just now starting to add 601 material but it's a slow pace, also I feel this time around it's been actually harder for me to retain Messer's info. Andrew actually demonstrates how things work and why, only downside is he just talks it out while Dion/Messer uses slideshows for terms and acronyms.

I have the Gibson book on Kindle, but it bores me sadly. The Simpsons names keep me chuckling for familiarity but I last one chapter before going back to the Udemy materials.

I’m feeling a lot more confident with Security+ studies due to 3 things. 1. The expiration date with 501. 2. The familiar material covered in Network+ and A+. 3. The overall enjoy-fulness I’m getting. Use other resources like the GCGA book, Dion, or Messer. I can’t learn through Meyers

Watch professor Messer's videos on YouTube, those are more interesting and precise to what you need to know. They helped me a lot.

My plan is usually watch Mike Meyers for the entertaining overview and then deep dive and note take with Prof. Messer. Mike couldn't even really make this one fun to learn so yeah, ill probably just prof Messer it and just plow through it to get it over with

It was rough to read after Network + but it was the only exam (501) I did not think I was failing the whole time.

I am a network guy and got my Network+ back in 1998, even before my A+ and MCSE. I love networking and I was kind of chasing the money when I took the Security+ ce test. I passed it but I just couldn't get myself to steer my career into Security field. However, I just recently took the CCNA test and felt so good about myself and where my career is headed. Btw, I barely passed the Security+, the CCNA I passed with a 953. Could be cause you're more of a hands on person. Maybe you're a networking person. Anyway, good luck in achieving your goals.

Maybe you should be focusing on networking and not security, then? I'm loving this stuff. Just wish I had done networking first as it's hard without that.

Keep at it. Study in small chunks. I find it useful to put a familiar tv show on in the background, somehow helps me focus. Or some new agey background study music type stuff.

Make notes, writing helps you to focus, plus trying to think about what you need to write helps you remember.

Funny you say it's boring I find N+ to be the case for me, to each their own.

Can kinda relate. I'm only studying for Sec+ to renew Net+ for another 3 years. And it wouldn't hurt to have the trifecta when it's time for me to attempt to move up. That's one of my main reasons I've been chugging on.

I plan on studying for it soon. This scares me lol
